Shiny Toy Guns – You Are The One Lyrics 15 years ago
To me, there's love here, but it's a giving in.

What I hear is the female figure being in love, knowing it. The male figure is in denial, and doesn't want it. Feels it's wrong for some reason. But he gives in, because the passion is too great. "I'm gonna take what's evil." He's freaking out about the idea of being with her, though, drinking to try and get it out of his head, or to dull his fear enough to see truthfully, but it's not working.

The girl's parts are calling him out on his denial. He's kissing her and touching her, but still running away. She's telling him that it's alright. "Your God knows his faithful." She's trying to convince him, telling him that "we're gonna lose forever" if he keeps running away from it and holding it off.

The first chorus is his giving in. The second is confirming that she's already desperately in love with him, and not going to let him go.

IAMX – Mercy Lyrics 15 years ago
I think it's more saying, "You're my mercy". It's a very bittersweet. It's a mix between pain and ecstacy, a desperate kind of obsessive love so strong that it's "like a lifeline". The one he's singing to is like his prayer, thus him talking about kneeling at that person's feet. :D

Tori Amos – Flavor Lyrics 16 years ago
This is a gorgeous song. I agree with stentorian. I've missed for a while being able to find Tori songs that can make me FEEL. What I've heard of the new album, she's going back to her roots, and that makes me very happy, indeed. Just beautiful.

Patrick Wolf – Short Stories Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh, how I wish he had finished the story!

I love this song, though. It leaves so much to the imagination.

I definitely agree with LNFMYG-LNHHYD. Patrick talks a lot about his two different sides. It's a beautiful metaphor. :D

Patrick Wolf – The Railway House Lyrics 18 years ago
This is an absolutely gorgeous song. To me, it's not only a song about the lovers, but the house, wherein the people in the song have a story that will soon replace the story of the house that they're settling into, one that's been caught in time long enough that its tale has been forgotten under the nettles...

It's just beautiful, that the two people mature together, leaving behind their old vices, even though it means giving up childhood vices and freedoms.

Just wonderful.

Tori Amos – Beauty of Speed Lyrics 18 years ago
I can definitely see where you're coming from, starpatroller, but I think that there might be some really literal meaning in here, too.

"Speed", as in the drug.

Yes, there's definitely the aspect of a relationship in here, but I think there might be a double meaning of the drug being used as a coping mechanism to deal with a relationship gone very wrong.

Normally, I wouldn't think that, but looking at the lyrics, she speaks of moving from a "black and white world" to one filled with color, which is very reminiscent of a lot of older songs that speak of the mind-opening powers of drugs.

Beside, Clyde is portrayed (not just in this song) as a "broken" person. One who has fallen apart and is trying to put herself back together. Tori's past, also, had some drug use in it, so it could be her speaking of her past experiences.

Or I could be completely off. Who knows with a Tori Amos song?

Imogen Heap – The Moment I Said It Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is gorgeous. I've been listening to it for days, on and off with Hide and Seek. Both of them are so powerful, in such different ways. The way this song reaches a powerful climax, and then wanes into the slow chimes that seem to go on forever, until you realize that they represent a clock chiming 9:00 (at least that's how I saw it).

I'm glad some other people pointed out the mistakes in the lyrics. :D

The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics 19 years ago
And, to add to my previous comment, now that I've read most of what my predecessors said, I though Amanda was a transsexual at first, too, because of this and of the multiple meanings of "Sex Changes" (making babies OR literally: sex changes) Seeing pictures of her as a little girl on the site, however, quelched that idea. Which is kind of sad, actually. XD

Reading the comment from Perfect Scars above that had the actual words of Amanda was really nice because it shows that the song is meant to have that lovely multiple meaning. "...my confusing biology (Half Jack and Half Kathy), my confused sexuality (the curse of being a dominant kinda woman with serious penis envy) and the questions i had around my conception and birth." Now, c'mon, doesn't that just pretty much cover everything we've all said? :D

The Dresden Dolls – Half Jack Lyrics 19 years ago
After I saw the "To My Father" on the site, I realized what the song was about. Oddly enough, I was one of the people who thought of the hermaphrodite/gender dysphoria meaning first.

And, oddly enough, I like that meaning better, because I find it easier to relate to than I do the father one, especially if you think of it as an internalized state of hermaphroditism or of being an androgyne. With that meaning, this song means so much to me, and is my favorite Dresden Dolls song, with the classic Coin-Operated Boy and Girl Anachronism (as well as Bad Habit and Sing, two other favorites) following close behind.
