DEFINITELY about suicide. "Think happy thoughts and we'll fly home.." Think happy thoughts to clear your mind and not scare yourself so you can get through your suicide peacefully. Not a happy song. |

There are like seven pages of comments, so excuse me if I didn't read them all and I missed this interpretation. However, I think that this song is about love. Of course, it can be taken as drugs: he describes "floating in the most peculiar way" and "the stars look very different" and he is lost in space, essentially. But many of the feelings one has when taking drugs are the same as when they are in love. Feelings of euphoria, a change in the way they see the world, etc. To compare i'd brig up Greenday's "Give Me Novocain." On the surface it is about him beginning to take drugs. However, upon closer inspection, it is clear that the "Novocain" he desires is love to "drain the pressure from the swelling". Maybe Bowie wasn't thinking of love when he wrote this, and maybe it was really about drugs, maybe his intention was to just write about a lost space pilot. I don't doubt it. However, that is the beauty of music and interpretation. I also find it interesting how many parallels there are between falling in love and taking drugs. I also think it is interesting to see such a veiled meaning in something that seems to obvious. |

i completely agree with pain.
she's been pushed around, and she's finally sticking up for herself.
i love the line "it takes more than a heartbeat to get me"
because i always took it as she doesn't take just anyone who's alive, you need more.
at least thats how i saw it. |

Sounds like the girl got pregnant, and they have to deal with it. And how on TV they always show the situations turning out great, but it really isn't what you expect, so don't make the mistake, because it will destroy your dreams. |

I don't think that line means someone is lost at sea literally.
I think he's saying that metaphorically, like they feel lost within themselves and in life, and they don't know how to get back |
