Five for Fighting – Road To Heaven Lyrics 19 years ago
My best guess:
The singer sometimes ponders the meaning of life and if God exists. When he's drunk and dreaming, he wonders if the path to understand our place in the world is anyone out there, and what it could be like. Maybe someday he'll find this path...

Five for Fighting – The Riddle Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, this is the best interpretation I've seen.
A man asks his dad as he's dying at the end of a summer, "What's the point of life? A terrible feeling has come over me." The dad feels bad his son would feel this way, and tells him to hear a good Bob Dylan song, check out a lunar eclipse, or meet someone beautiful to make him fall in love (an angel).

And at the end, he tells his son the riddle; "There's a reason for the world, you, and I."

Years later, the father has died and now the man is picking his son up from school. He asks his son what's he learned in his life because life isn't perfect like the fairy tales he's heard.

The son replies, "We're smaller than smaller, nothing at all and everyone is lonely, but come play with me and everything will be alright." He even repeats the riddle from earlier (though is more romantic than literal.)

The man is still skeptical, and says for all he's said, who are we to say what the reason for the world is? The bridge then occurs which is just reflecting on life's questions.

The son sees his dad doesn't get it, and he gives him a clue: "I love you for free. My love for you is completely unconditional and you and I are the best thing we got."

The light bulbs go off in the man's head, and he realizes that sure we're all insignificant, but who we love is all we have on this big rock we call Earth. The person you love is what gives you a reason to live and with that, you got all you need in life. And he loves his son for free in return.

Five for Fighting – Two Lights Lyrics 19 years ago
Here's my meaning.
The singer's son goes off to fight a war. The father's too afraid to know whether he's alive or dead, so he goes out and drives aimlessly and tells his wife to leave the lights on if their son's alive and turn them off if he's dead. At the end of the song, he drives up to the house and sees the lights on. (my eyes burn)
