i love the "wanting to say i will as my last testament" line... i think Jenny is saying that the last thing she wants to commit to is love, and moreover marriage.. I have heard of people saying the words "I will" instead of "I do" i just think that lyrically it fits better the way jenny has said it... i think its so sweet... like who really needs a last testament when you have love <3 i love jenny xxx |

| Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics | 16 years ago |
i believe this song is about believing that you have your place in the world and if you look around, everything is in a place.. some right some wrong. you just need to find where you belong. The only thing in this world that we can ever have 100% control over is ourselves... worrying about things that we cant change creates a great deal of suffering... i mean, its not that we cant help to make things better but we should worry about ourselves because if we suffer then we will be no good to anyone in the end.... i dont think conor is having a massive dig at america with the black child line, or that the child belongs there. i think conors just saying for today, lets not worry about the child and worry about ones self... the line about acid kids in a green fish bowl is a drug reference yes. i know from a friend of mine lol ;) being on acid and witnessing the world and people around you can kinda feel like you are in a fish bowl looking out at the goings on of the world... i too would like to know what the death ledger is... im not american and i dont know if he is referring to one of your documents of constitution or liberty thingys... and the lines "In truth, the forest hears each sound Each blade of grass as it lies down The world requires no audience No witnesses, no witnesses" i believe to be about the "if a tree falls in the forrest...." thingy... and conor is saying that the world goes on no matter what humans are doing... if a tree falls in the forrest of course it makes a sound... to even consider that it might not is arrogant and suggesting that the only reason anything makes a sound or even exists is for human consumption !!! and lastly, i dont think conor is saying that he dont like cauliflower.. it just goes well in a casserole thanks <3 |

anyways would be cool to get the songs meaning discussion underway lol i think its dealing a lot with change and how it can make you feel a bit dizzy from how fast everything moves... i think the chorus is positive, he has found something that makes him want to really try with life... im really happy for him if thats actually what is goin on! |

| Conor Oberst – Souled Out!!! Lyrics | 17 years ago |
im with rorytmeadows.. i strongly disagree with the immigration theme.. its definitely about heaven.. the line "Not all my boys believe in science Stretching truth in the promised land" means, not all his boys believe the evolution theory. That they believe god created man, they are religious, conor is not religious therefore, conor is being polite in saying they are stretching the truth when they are preaching.. they are lying that god exists... i hate giving out the cliche response to conors work, the whole.. "its about drugs!" thing.. but there is undoubtably a few drug references in this song as there are in many of his songs... i dont think they are the major thing with this song though... just like ... that people are rarely perfect, we all do something that is considered wrong in the eyes of the lord.. ill throw this idea out there.. feel free to disagree coz i havnt really thought about it lol miguel and monse are a couple in a mexico ghetto. miguel is quite religious and swears by god but monse doesnt feel the same, she does however keep her mouth shut and "keeps the peace".. miguel sells drugs and they both take the drugs... the argument monse has here is that even though miguel is religious, he's not getting into heaven selling drugs and stuff... that works for me a lot better than the immigration thing... no offence.. i like other peoples ideas on here so thanks for reading mine :) |

| where do you guys get all these songs that arent on the album.. im not very good at finding them... any suggestions ?? | |
| Bright Eyes – Coat Check Dream Song Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i do know that conor actually dreamed this song, he said that he never dreams songs up but this is the exception... i guess it was conceived through some amazing sleep, he awoke and this song was born... can conor be any more amazing?? my fave line from this song is "One brick on top of another Such is the measure of man" Its cool how it gives you an idea of building, progression and achievement... the measure of man can be all these things but also in a negative light, the bigger house you have, the greater people/society might believe you are even if you are a horrible person... |

| Bright Eyes – Man Named Truth Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i took this from a live version, its pretty different to the version above, i dont know what version that is... i didnt wana put up the live version so ill just show a couple inaccuracies in the tab here this line is "I left a city through a tunnel and I headed for the sticks" not skids and this line is "With oregano oil in a morphine drip" oregano oil is apparently stronger than morphine as a pain killer or bloody effective at least |
| Conor Oberst – Corina, Corina Lyrics | 17 years ago |
conor changed the original version of the song to suit himself and be more appropriate for his lady friend Corina Figueroa Escamilla.. i dunno where Corina is from (probably Toluca) but Conor wrote the solo album in Tepoztlán... hence You're way out there in Toluca I'm trapped in Tepoztlán |

well im just gonna ramble on with what i think.. hope you can keep up hey... Its hard to fathom the stuff they can do with science now days, the way they can keep us alive, even bring people back from the dead... is it real? yeah there are refrigerators full of blood, waiting to be pumped into someone to keep them alive... The human race has successfully spent another century pointing guns at each other, fighting over beliefs, gods and stuff they have no proof exists. I wasnt raised with religion so its hard to understand how they can kill for a god that may (probably) dont exist... it does make me feel a bit insane, how can humans think like this? are we even alive?? like i said, i wasnt raised in a religious household, heaven wasnt really a hot topic until my father died when i was too young.... what do you tell a four year old when they ask where their father is?? well heaven is the obvious answer.... makes you wonder, sometimes hope that there is a heaven... i still dont believe there is... satellites are probably the closest thing to heaven (being in the very distant sky) but even when they die they dont disappear into some magical place... they fly around space like trash.. Sometimes the way the world is bugs me... i wonder what it would be like if there were no schools, no police, no law... if we were like animals? free? you cant do what you want in this world. if what you want to do is judged by the greater "good" as being wrong, you are a criminal.... if a dog bites a child we put it down.. the dog knows no better.... so anyway you shouldn't be a criminal, we are here to spend our money we work so hard to earn, eat and make families.. if you are "lucky" then you will be able to take vacations so you can feel "free" and take it "easy"..... I don't think the lyrics about the atomic clock and bombs are meant so literally.. i think the atomic clock is more of a biological clock... e.g. im 25, im prob gonna live till im 75 so that means i got about 50 years left.. every year im gonna count down till im closer to death... when you are young, you do figure there will always be time enough for life, i got 50 years left damn it!! but now its not as clear, i worry that im never gonna be happy if i don't hurry up and do something with my life... i want a purpose!! it does make me feel a bit down... all those people that were around when i was younger are finishing uni, getting married, buying houses.. i hardly see any of them people anymore, wouldn't talk to some of them if it wasn't for bloody facebook... but one day we are all going to die, and then we will be free from the shackles of this life... kinda makes me worry less about death, i only worry for the ones left behind... hopefully you can digest my highly opinionated rant about this song... i haven't put an incredible amount of thought into it, i would love any feedback... thanks Adam |

umm i doubt its about a sex party.. and the second verse i think is wrong a bit.. i think that ... Two faces Keep one in your back Two faces From which you can choose Two faces should be... Two faces Keep one in your BAG Two faces From which you can choose Two faces |

| Conor Oberst – Milk Thistle Lyrics | 17 years ago |
the dylan call is a bit annoying yeah.... i think he is a far greater lyricist than dylan.. This song is awesome.. i have many fave lines from this song, heaps have been said by others, another is the line "I keep death at my heels Like a basset hound" |

| Conor Oberst – NYC-Gone, Gone Lyrics | 17 years ago |
whoever mentioned the lack of sophistication on this album is right but i think the whole album, lyrically, musically and even recording "quality" wise, is just very relaxed and easy and i think this song kinda explains why... i dont really consider this as a song, more like its a kind of interlude, its simple and says what it needs to say... NY leaves Conor uninspired and so he goes to mexico for a holiday, a rest, a cleansing and to make an amazing record. There are other songs on this album that have the traditional bright eyes style convoluted lyrics, eagle on a pole is a good example... i didnt care too much for that song when i first heard it, not really until about the 6th listen did i think more into it. Anyways, this song is good for what it is, perfect actually and goes for the perfect amount of time too... not one that you would request to hear on the radio but if it did come on you would get down to it hillbilly style... |

hm im thinkin that bpm5054 dude is readin a bit far into this song :S but some interesting points i guess... if i may do the same and put out an obscure suggestion ?? El Cielo es azul - people are saying this means "the sky is blue" well cielo is also spanish for heaven and azul is blue and kina sounds/looks like the word azure wich is not only the colour blue but the name of a band (azure ray) which conors kinda girlfriend is in... is the heaven azure ?? i know its far out and i dont really think much of my suggestion but yeah it makes me a bit curious i guess |
| Conor Oberst – Lenders in the Temple Lyrics | 17 years ago |
yeah its mandala... im guessin he is refering to the ones created by native americans considerin this album is all about mexico and stuff... this whole song is quite cryptic and coded ... its realy cool.. very conor if you ask me.. there are elements in there of old bright eyes songs like the reference to us being sand comparative to the the line "your heart, its just sand" in the song "the big picture" also the line "cause it did not happen" reminds me of conors lyrics about debating whats truly permanent.. i guess that third to last stanza is kinda saying that if you want to be free there is one certain way of doing it but really, nothing is permanent, even things that are super complex and take a long time to create can be washed away by the sea, we too are complex and can be erased just as easily, so why not smile and enjoy what you can and be happy that you can feel something even if it may not be real.. sorry if i didnt make much sence ... i didnt proof read this.. thanks |

Tfil7 said - ""I tried to pass for nothing, but my dreams gave me away"........such a telling line about what kind of person conor really is" i totally agree |
| Bright Eyes – Neely O'Hara Lyrics | 18 years ago |
the song is based on the book, this is a given. not everything conor writes about is about himself, maybe he can be negative and shitty, then reads this book and writes a song using the books story with his own made up adaptations to create that bright eyes feel... im sorry, im tired and not really thought about it that much... |
| Bright Eyes – Neely O'Hara Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| umm cowboyupinblue.. no, no.. Neely Jenkinsis in no way comparable to the book Character.. if i had to pick the connection between the two Neely's i would say umm maybe conor liked Neely Jenkins and heard there was a book about a girl with the same obscure name and he wanted to read it and thought wow.. this girl is messed up like i feel sometimes.. ill write a song about it... | |
| Bright Eyes – Tereza and Tomas Lyrics | 18 years ago |

hey Rob C Kelly, i have another book reference for you.... The Power Of Myth by joseph cambell from the song Soul Singer in a Session Band |
| Bright Eyes – Oh, You Are the Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the Earth in Place Lyrics | 18 years ago |
ok perhaps the book is their lives and every thing that happened BEFORE everything went bad... this kinda correlates with the you will lyrics "if you dont then this books all lies" ... kinda meaning "if you dont return to me / do everything else you promised or said you would do then its all lies" when we love someone we tell them things like ill always love you and we will be together forever especially when were young.. who here has thought they would be together forever with someone their not with anymore? i know i have.. |

| Bright Eyes – Oh, You Are the Roots That Sleep Beneath My Feet and Hold the Earth in Place Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| afastingartist i'm sorry but your wrong, the people that think the song is about Neely are correct. They have the childhood love story as painted by the references to the attic. The second verse describes his selfishness, the "ship" is himself. The third verse is him saying he deeply regrets his ruining the love, he hates himself for it and is acting angry but realistically he hopes she is still always worrying about him. he re-emphasises how important she is to him and closes with (yes its the epitome of romance, morbid as it may be) them sharing a name (his surname) on a beautiful grave (if you still dont get it, they got married and lived happily ever after).. | |
| Bright Eyes – Hot Knives Lyrics | 18 years ago |
just a thought decoratedemergency9 your interpretation of "Gave up her existence To feel everything, dream other’s dreams" was: -she was inspired by the mystic to change her life for the better. i kinda think that this is about the mystic.. the mystic gave up her life to be able to interpret other peoples lives and therefore help the mistress in this song |
| Bright Eyes – Hot Knives Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this thread is too long for me to read it all.. lets just say that i agree with some of you and i think others need to think a little harder ... my break down of the song verse by verse. but first... i think this song is from the mistress' point of view. she is a average woman who believes in god and does normal things. she is in love with a man who has been hiding something (a wife) from her... verse 1: the wife isnt angry at the mistress, the mistress is clearly upset having to clear her throat and having the guts to speak to the wife.. they are both suffering the ache of betrayal by the husband... verse 2: her relationship with the married man is over, she dosnt care for life anymore. it dosnt interest her in the slightest but she is back to her day to day routine. probably working maybe looking after her own children from a previous marriage. There is a line in this verse that confuses me:"On guests performing miracles" it makes me think that she may be a nurse, prostitute, i cant get that bit.. She believes in god, when she does wrong, be it adultery or any sin she knows she can turn to god, he is a man that she can trust.. when she feels alone or lost, god is there. the woman is going through a change. she doesn't want to be who she is anymore, she wants to completely change, be free again like when she was young.. chorus: things from her past, parties, drugs, dancing the night away, no one tells time so the good feeling could possibly go on for ever and never have to come back to reality interlude: (yeah its good) i believe this points out that she no longer sees the contrast between making love and being fucked, she has made love (to the cheating man) and he obviously didnt love her(he was just fucking her) the "so what" is her telling herself that its no big deal, lying to herself because she doesn't want to acknowledge the hurt anymore the cartoon reference is about her not feeling real, like she is a product of someones imagination therefore she can do what she likes without consequence she is speaking to a random person who is bright and awake at this time of night (possibly due to drugs), hence a full moon.. she now has someone that is willing to stay up and prolong reality coming back Verse 3: The woman has fully changed, she is no longer relying on god to make her happy, she has made a spiritual journey and setting her life plan on what a mystic tells her basically. she says her goodbyes to her family and leaves outro: rejoicing in an absence of god pink noise is like static, i think this could be referring not only to noise but the goings on of day to day life... i think the pink noise sound oscillates through life but what you can pinpoint is where she is at in the world well yeah.. i guess thats another massive opinion about this song... im not saying its all correct just my opinion.. so its right lol jk thanks adom |
