This is song means so much to me. It happens that at my school there were an uncanny amount of teen deaths (at least one being a suicide) in one month: November. Everyone was devastated. And on top of that, two of best friends, attempted suicide. One was my BEST friend; my unromantic soulmate. Thankfully, neither of the suicides "worked." She OD'ed on a bunch of sleeping pills, but someone called her and knew she wasn't okay and she got to the hospital. This song describes perfectly the culmination of all these events, and what i would feel like if my best friend did die. "you alone with those pills.." and more. This is some sort of life-changing song for me.

Thank you so much to the people who took the time to add his commentary, i found it really interesting, because i live in a town similar to Alanson (pop. 300) but only 30 minutes from TC (Traverse City). I found it very humorous that they went to the Cherry Capital Mall, because that mall is now 2nd to a bigger mall in town now. But his words are true, we have the Cherry Festival every year that attracts so many tourists (we call them "fudgies") TC ends up looking like NYC. I love that Sufjan always mentions places I go to on a regular basis, it makes me proud to live in Northern Michigan.

NHS, i believe, refers to the coveted National Honor Society..It is a prestigous society of the sorts for high schools. It's all about helping your community and things..The students serve as the President, Vice President, and Treasurer/Secretary. I am guessing that is what it is referring to.

The Starting Line – Ready Lyrics

While I realize this song is about the band and the record company and all that, I just got out of a very long relationship so I have a different take on it...we have been trying to remain best friends, but the transition is hard, and i am still in love with him but it is very much unrequited. I used to talk to him every night on the phone, and atleast once a day, so naturally I cannot go without talking to him. Hence, "Well, I'm calling all the time." And the trying to be a best friend while still trying to get over him: "All I wanted was a little bit of time for me try." And then the realization that I have to stop loving him and get up out of this mess: "Try to get up, I'm gonna get up." And our friends..some of them told me I need to get away from him from a while to clear my head and stop these feelings, and when some support me that just say oh he just needed to figure things out in his own life, he's confused. So the line "All they ever wanted was a little bit of time for me to clear my head, to clear my head" applies to both him and me. Sorry for the long interpretation.

noseovertail, I read/saw about that as well. Because of that, I always picture a dark scene on a street corner with a girl grasping onto a man's shoulders kind of begging him to come back, but he just keeps shaking his head. I think the first verse displays this scene of mine the best. And yes, I make music videos in my head.

On the CD, there is an interview, and they say that when writing this song, they wanted to find an actual synonym for acquiesce. They couldn't find one that fit the meaning quite as well so they used this title. I personally think it adds a bit of helpless to the song that is very helpful.

well the title is definetly an allusion to THE GREAT GATSBY...throughout the whole book they cannot pin point what it is this beautiful woman's voice sounds like...someone points out "it sounds like money." i don't really know what that has to do with the song and i just discovered this band's add in one of my AP mags but yea..just a little literary allusion.

I think it's about the human tendency to fall into a pattern, and the realization of it. Whether it's that coffee you drink every morning while not even noticing what it tastes like, or that repetitive unsatisfying sex life. I think it really says something though that through this, art is the reason that she does all of this. The great power that art, in any of its forms, can do to you, even though you can't even define what it does. And then there's that person that is always there. He's usually a good thing, but again, just part of your habitual unsatisfying routine. I think she's describing that intense realization that your life is lived "out of habit" and that it makes you want to just say "fuck this time and place."

I was thinking about the name of the song, and figured out a potential meaning, that is deeper than putting the album name with the main idea...I think it invoves the 7 deadly sins, plus the two people involved. 7+2=9? Just a thought, but because this song could have more than one "crime", i thought maybe the 7 sins could be worked in to the concept. -gatsby

Someone told me today that it said "nurse" not "nerves", and I thought maybe this was about someone in a mental hospital. Hence, "the things in my head you used to admire." The person might be obsessed with the idea of this person they love/loved. This reminds me of the book Dreamland by Sarah Dessen, whether it says nerves or nurse. -gatsby
