moesix, that's a very good analysis. This is an excellent song. I took the song in much the same way, expectations being placed on him and struggling to live up to these expectations, but I also got the feeling that he justified 'walking the straightest line' in order to achieve success in his life. In other words, he felt that doing what he was told and trying to achieve things would equate to a better life in the end. This time of uncertainty however, where he has clearly lost/struggled to live with a love, has him questioning whether he did the right thing by trying to live up to expectations. Another thing I drew from this song was that he did not pusue his love because choosing her (or whatever he/it may be, let's call it a she), meant that a some time he would lose her. That's an interesting point. In order to avoid the intense pain of losing a love, would this deter you from pursuing a love in the first place? See the lyric: 'I lost my head at the thought of losing, I fell apart when it came to choosing you'. For me, the lyrics: 'I'll steal your cries....etc' are from a future perspective, when he bears some resentment towards his lost love, whether that being because she chose someone else to be with, and/or has left him alone with no one. One of his motivations to live is not to show weakness or hurt to his lost love, and another is to see that lost love suffer. '....And run it all aground'. Thanks. My perspective on the song. |
