oh lauryn...i think this song is a perfect example of a rocky relationship where she is clearly in love with someone and that person just treats her like horribly. All she wants is a little "reciprocity," respect, and love. She realizes her mistakes, notices them, but when someone is promising you so much "said you'd die for me, give me, live for me," it's really hard to let that go. Best line... I don't think that this song is about a love that Mariah let slip away and is now regretting it...I used to think that thought until I was listening to it the other night, and feeling down, but I realized that the song is the other way around. Mariah didn't want to let the relationship go with the man, but pretended that she agreed (I didn't mean it when I said I didn't love you so...I should have held on tight). I think that she misses this person and knows in her heart that they belong together and she is regretting allowing him to get away because she didn't fight hard enough for the love she knows they both felt... |

I think what Mariah does best on this song is capture the true emotion of a relationship that didn't end in the way she had hoped. After loving someone for so long and giving them so much, it becomes agonizing to realize that everything you have built and believed to be true, isn't there anymore. I love how she says "If you don't know me at this point, then I highly doubt you ever will,' because so often people, myself included, get into relationship that end up being so one-sided and you think someone has you and understands you, but there comes that realization that, after so much, someone may not know you and probably never will... |
