| I won't thank you - but you're absolutely right - it's rustling leaves! | |

| I think of it as a full circle thing. I think it's mostly about being in love and intimate with a wife/lover, but I feel like it alludes to the three most important relationships any man ever has - his own mother, his wife, and then their child. All (in a perfect world) unconditional, beautiful relationships and it's come 'round full circle. He's in love with the mother of his child(ren). It's gorgeous. | |

I really don't think it's about a prostitute! I think pretty much everyone here - and Johnny Rzeznik have said what it's all about - a young couple with an unplanned pregnancy. But when you put in the context of where Johnny grew up it makes sense - I grew up around the same neighborhood. It's working class (though there aren't a lot of actual jobs left since all the factory's left in the 70's) mostly catholic, old school. Not only would a teen pregnancy be looked upon very poorly, but it would in a real way ruin 3 lives - if you get married and drop out of high school and stay in the neighborhood you will struggle all your life. Every kid wants to be somebody and get out of there. It's "get married OR run away" Get it? My take on the sheets you never knew... if they were just kids and they had strict parents they probably weren't getting it on in a bed... in the car, behind the bleachers, whatever, but not in a proper bed. If they run away, or get married, he can finally be with her that way, and apparently that means a lot to him. It's symbolic of doing it the "right" "grownup" way.. not sneaking (or sliding) around. |

Like the best of songs (and this is on the list) it can have many meanings to many people. For me this song has always been about the long drawn out and tragic end of my marriage. Obviously it wasn't really written about me. But it's so perfect it feels like it was. I felt for sure last night At once we said goodbye No one else will know these lonely dreams No one else will know that part of me Im still driving away And Im sorry every day I wont always love these selfish things I wont always live... Stop it... It was my turn to decide I knew this was our time No one else will have me like you do No one else will have me, only you Only he and I could know how exquisitely that expresses our situation. It was my turn to decide it was over after lots of back and forth, it was time. Even though there were still strong feelings there. |

I think in both the original and this one - it's like the singer is singing it to an ex lover who's moved on - trying to convince the lover and himself that he's "feeling good" There's fish in the sea, river running free - kind of conjures up the idea of "plenty of fish in the sea" to date, freedom to play around etc. |
