that first line after the first chorus is really tricky. I want to hear "...at half a mind to just apologize," but that could be wrong. I'm pretty sure about these though: so how I CHOSE and choose to make USE OF this life allotted me and each played to ME begrudging accessory these TERMS of my demise in DAYS less dignified PANDERING'S the one thing PRIDEFUL progeny and I, though sometimes weak still shudder to keep this secrets we keep for their sake let me stay to you WHOM I confide |

The theme of the song seems to be fruitless effort vs. productive stillness/resignation, with the moral being that total surrender to God is better than trying to get by on one's own understanding and volition. The song has uses a couple images to communicate this point. First we have the two daughters, one loudly voicing her disapproval (without getting what she wants, apparently) and the other standing silent (but still "disappointed"). I suppose the idea is that the quiet sister knows that the best way to accomplish your goals (in this case) is to grin and bear it. And then there's the tortoise and the hummingbird, one that gets moved around by making itself appear immobile (fake cast, etc.) and the other flapping furiously but staying in the same spot in the air. (also, a water "wheel" spinning but not actually going anywhere, and perhaps the father completing his work while just sitting silently) Great stuff, I'd say. |

I think it's: "you'll ride someone who looks like me, untriumphantly" Also, it might be: then "Child," asked the birds, "Well aren't they lovely words we sing?" given that he says the child says nothing, and the fact that it's the birds ("we") who are singing |

Thanks for the help. I think this is about as far as we can get. At least, I think, we did better than whoever did the other set of lyrics for this song (try google). |

I'm pretty sure it's: Could you ever lead your son along on mountaintops? The song seems to reference the story of Abraham and Isaac. God asked Abraham to "destroy his love," his son Isaac, so Abraham led him to the top of a mountain. Just as he was "swinging his dagger" down to sacrifice his son, God provided a ram for the sacrifice instead. The entire episode proved Abraham's faith and served as a parallel to God's willingness to "destroy his love" with the crucifixion of Jesus. |

I was hesitant with the ghosts line because I had hoped it would shed a little more light on "so fragile, so thin / just like my own." I suppose he's referring to "horizon's hands" being just like his...but how is the horizon "fragile" and "thin"? The "have land" line makes sense, thanks. It sounds like he's saying "oh" here, which doesn't match with the parallel line that later uses "though," but they're both essentially there just for meter, so I didn't think it was that important. To be honest, the "name" line sounds like "Came an A manatee," but that makes zero sense. I just can't think of a verb that sounds like "tea" and doesn't end in s that would fit. The "life to be" line sounds like "How dull with-a my life to be," which doesn't make sense. "How always" makes more sense, but I definitely hear a "d" sound somewhere in there. That last line sounds spot on, thanks. I'm not sure how to punctuate it, though. Does "lost and found" modify "boy"? "Time"? |

"When all we want isn't quite what we've got" "Shake like a cold" (?) "Our hopes in vain and our thoughts to bring (break?)" That's all I got. See if you can help with "Fields of Ius." |
