To me it seems like he's growing. First, he's a young soldier. He meets a girl, his first love. He's infatuated, but still the other things he's doing seems more important now. "There's nothing that I wouldn't do, save lay my rifle down." Then, he's gotten a little older. He's looking for stability which he finds. But he gets so confident in what he has that he fails to see that the relationship isnt working and in the end breaks. He fails again, they both are free to do what they want. Last, is his third love. He has had a young love and a stable relationship. Now, as an older man he's throwing away all his other notions about love. He hints at sort of playing with women. His lover seems to be younger than him, he feels like he's made her grow up faster than she should have. Theres no regards for "rules" or what may be acceptable. They are running around doing as they please. It may not be a "clean" life but he doesn't care much. "Try one, and try two", his many attempts at love. "Guess it always comes down to, Alright, it's okay, guess it's better to turn this way", his relationships always fail, but it's happened so many times he says that everthings okay, he needs to try, turn, a different way. "But I won, so you lose", He's a womanizer. He played his games and feels like he won, got as much as he could. |

Its about having to rely on yourself to get out of something. You have gotten so used to the rules set that you control yourself. "Start to push, break your own glass ceiling." You've got to do it yourself. "Who let it end up on the ground? How'd I end up on the ground." Didn't really realize at first that you did it on your own. "Every speed on our knees is crawling" you can't make it better till you get up and get it done. If you stay on your knees, stay down, nothing will get better. She's going to go without him, but she'll be lonely. She wants something new, but is it worth leaving him behind? What they had wasn't all they expected. She feels like she was there for him but maybe he wasn't for her. They kind of give up. Especially her, she was so focused on him and now she's risking it all and leaving. |

| Very well might be one of my favorite songs by them. I think it might be more about being "stuck" on something rather than death. Getting frustrated. Or something to that effect. I don't really know how to analyze it. But I love his voice and I love how he sings the first line. | |
