Thrice – Open Water Lyrics 17 years ago
Also the next song 'digital sea' mentions

"Cold and alone...on a digital sea...instead of your arms wrapped around me"

to prove that there is a girl in the equation.

Thrice – Open Water Lyrics 17 years ago
Maybe you guys know more about it than me as I just staretd to get into Thrice, but to me this is about the difference between being single and being with somone.

The open water
chills me to my bones,
but it's the only place that I feel alive.
The ocean floor
begins to disappear;
I sense that terrible depth.
The open water
is my only fear,
but I'll sail as long as I still have breath in me.

This to me, is clearly allegorical of that. Being alone is scary and tumultuous, but its the only place that he feels alive-pretty self explanatory. There's no ball and chains when you're not obliged to someone. When the ocean floor begins to disappear hes seeing this future of being single as his relationship is coming apart. Nevertheless, he'll sail on as long as he can.

Between the devil and the deep blue sea, I stare into the abyss - the devil could represent the object of his disaffection. But between the two, being at sea (or single) is the lesser of the two evils.

Just my opinion, I guess it could all also apply to your theist theories.

Brand New – The Archers Bows Have Broken Lyrics 18 years ago
Clearly there's a prevailing agreement that this song is about religion, and though I admit that there is a religious motif in this song, I don't believe that it's the theme. Nor do I think that the theory I'm about to theorize is the one theme of the song, rather, I think this song is a compilation of two or three motifs. The interpretation I think we're missing out on is most evident in verses two and four, though it is supported by the others.

Oh, order your daughters to ignore me
think that will sort me?
and sweep me under the rug?
while you're beating with a book
everyone that book tells you to love.

In verse four, the lyrics illustrate a father telling his daughters to ignore the speaker. The speaker contests him saying 'you think that will stop me' basically. It sounds like the father is perverting the religion to his own benefit by using it to ward off the speaker from his daughters.

There's a theory going around that the album actually begins with Welcome to Bangkok, and ends with either You Won't Know, or with Welcome to Bangkok-that its an album of cyclic progression, starting from its center and going around in a circle. (You can also see this cyclic theme on the face of the C.D itself, its a circle with all the tracks around it).

Going by that theory, I'm going to suggest looking at the song from a different perspective. What if the song begins in the middle and ends there as well? If it begins at verse four and ends at three. Then the song will have its exposition talking about this controlling father, trying to keep his daughters away from Jesse, and end around verse three:

Meet me tonight on the turnpike my darling,
where we believe in everything.
If we sweat all these debts then we're sure to drown,
so let's strap ourselves up to this engine now
with our God who we found laying under the back seat.

This verse seems very final, very ultimate, like its meant to be the last verse. Its the speaker and one of the daughters running away with him. Its about being free and absconding. I think its poetic that they find 'God' or rather a bible under the backseat, thereby reclaiming the religion that her father used against them.

You can also see references to these two daughters in two other songs.

Hey, hey, hey, Mr. Hangman,
You go get your rope
Your daughters weren't careful,
I fear that I am a slippery slope -you wont know

When I disappear do you fear for the sister I took
When I disappear it is clear I am up to no good -luca

Brand New – Luca Lyrics 18 years ago
Luca= Italian for 'Light' Hence Luca Brasi' name. And yeah, I was thinking that a song called light immediately following a song called 'Not The Sun' is important seeing as the sun makes light. Could "kinda sorta" be representative of an inconsistent mind (ex. You're nothing to me, you're not the sun/ you're everything to me, my bright light).

Though i think the Luca Brasi theory is pretty sound, I think its also important to recognize the meaning of 'Luca' meaning light. There's no light at the bottom of the ocean, whether metaphorical or not.

Dashboard Confessional – These Bones Lyrics 18 years ago
At an individual lyrical level I have to say I have no idea, but the way he repeats the same htings over and over and sings them faster strikes me as significant. Listen to the song and try to notice it.

Perhaps he's saying 'Life is repetitive and it only goes by faster and faster.'

With a pedal to the floor who could ask for more?
a fantastic way to kill some time

Though this might be getting to the minutiae, I think the 'fantastic wya to kill some time' part is very poetic as when we usually say "oh im gunna go kill some time by doing this" we're talking about the present.
However in this instance, killing some time is reffering to the future, as he's killing off all the time he'd have in the future if he didn't drive his car off the cliff.

Say Anything – Chia-Like, I Shall Grow Lyrics 19 years ago
It seems to me to be almost talking about how hes been screwed over by fate. Everyone around him is suceeding, but hes not, still, one day he'll come back and "get up" and totally pwn everyone with lyrics "flamethrower mouth".

the stars scar my ceiling
sun, i won't spare you
moon, i won't spare you

The stars are synonymous with fate, and they're scarring his ceiling (the sky) aka. fucking him over. But he'll rise up and when he does even the biggest bodies in the sky won't be spared for scorning him. The Sun and Moon=Popular bands

Brand New – Degausser Lyrics 19 years ago
"Take me, take me back to your bed
I love you so much that it hurts my head
Please say, "I don't mind you under my skin
And I’ll let your bad parts in. the bad parts in"

Though this could be interpreted as Seydurin has, I think that that might be going too deep. Maybe I’m totally wrong, but it sounds overtly sexual to me. "Take me, take me back to your bed" Is him asking a girl to come to his bed. He then tells her how much he loves her. "Please say, "I don't mind you under my skin" Now he’s pleading with her to let him inside of her or "under [her] skin". I'll let the bad parts in- I think we all know what "bad parts" might be alluding to.

I actually think there's an entirely different interpretation of this song that many of us are missing. Perhaps it's not religious as we might think, but simply about a loved that has been erased.

A degausser erases film so that things can be put on it again. What if one degaussed their memory of another in order to stop obsessing over them and move on with their life? Maybe a girl has erased him from her memory in order to escape a cycle of breakups and reunions.

I don't think the kind of love he's talking about in this song is the kind one shares with God.

Water symbolizes purity. That might explain the last verse.
