I thought this was about her childhood tbh. Maybe some sort of relationship in between, but locking the keys in someone's car is something generally associated with kids. |

@[jazztobak:726] - SWIM is experienced with LSD and mushrooms of the psilocybin variety (specifically British liberty caps). LSD produces much more of a mental trip, whereas psilocybin is more spiritual.
I cannot say for certain that this song is about a psychoactive substance to begin with, but comparison of the two, but although LSD does involve a lot of laughing, I would say mushrooms are definitely a better advised trip all round (particularly fresh).

I love this song. It's meaning is pretty obvious (the world's fucked and the only thing you can be sure of is dying) but you know, make the best of it.
That's the gist of a lot of their songs, anyway. |

I'm entirely sure that she has no love for Ayn Rand, like any sane, human person should. That isn't to say that individualism isn't a wonderful thing that we shouldn't all respect, any libertarian/egoist who believes that human society is best off as atomistic as possible is deluded and entirely selfish. There's a balance. I also imagine you're both American and about 20.

Well, no - the actual ideology of war as it was 75, 100, 200 and so on years is different. America doesn't go to war - it's a defense mission, or an invasion.
It's not about people not caring about the military. Plenty of people, including the media, are very pro-military.
And, as someone else has said, Haines and Shaw are very left-wing. They've written other songs with anti-military sentiments in them (e.g. old world underground). So, don't misinterpret the song like that, please.
I also don't think you've considered the sacrifices a lot of people make every day, which can be seen as far more brave than picking up a gun and shooting someone with it. Or rather, as it is nowadays, using a remote controlled drone... |

If where she lived at the time had a similar 'Oyster' or electronic payment system like London does, then that could be what she means? I guess it might just be the ticketing system in general though. :) |

It's so obviously about abortion. I never used to really get why, then, I had one...
'It was you, my sister and I, you slept the entire drive home...' I would imagine that the sister came along for 'female support' and I can totally see why she'd sleep through the journey home.
It also seems like this was what neither wanted, if it's based on Andy's real life, perhaps due to his Christian background (and probably hers) abortion would have frowned upon pre-marital pregnancy and abortion simultaneously. |

I think this is just a general song for people who are struggling, for whatever reason. It may have been written with a particular person or problem in mind, but I think Jenny was just trying to write a power song, as in 'If you're listening to this, and you feel like shit, then know you have the power to be better, you're a star, and you can shine'. |

Psh, at £20 a ticket I don't think I'll be going on the National Express to cheer myself up any time soon.

It's aimed at Blake, but I don't think it's overly negative...I think the last few lines seem to be suggesting that she wants to get over this, she wants to forgive him. But he needs to stop being so bitter and jealous about everything that's happened.
Pierre has suggested they've [Rilo] have more tricks up their sleeve, despite a recent interview with Blake Sennett saying it's effectively dead... |

@stevycurley892 - they seem to be quite free people, from the lyrics. i could imagine that if the singer was a guy it'd still make sense; it's only a kiss, so it doesn't really matter. |

Okay, your third point is silly. Sexual imagery has been used through time immemorial to display the relationship between one country and another, usually the invader and the invaded, with the former being the male counterpart, and the latter being the female. There's been a lot of sexual analysis within the context of colonisation and such, which America is often accused of being/doing.
If I'm honest, I don't know what this song means. But you're an idiot if you're going to put down someone else's theory (which is far more pertinent than 'lolsecks') on the partial basis that "it's full of sexual *imagery* and *metaphor*". |

This is such a lovely song. The melody is simple, and exhibits just how immense Dia's voice is.
Sad there are no other comments. Hopefully, some time in the near future, M&D and the guys will get the recognition they deserve. |

@zacharygarren -- his Dad has been around though, so I think that's false.
Whilst I doubt Andy is gonna be obscure about his feelings, that doesn't mean he can't be obscure in how he portrays them.
A lot of this album also seems to be about his barren relationship with God, so it might be religious imagery in here. However, I agree somewhat with krikitarmy. |

The music reminds me of something too, but not Christmas - this song actually reminds me of the kind of song David Bowie would do.
But I really bloody love these lyrics. They're really quite powerful (despite the somewhat cheesy music). |

No, loganrapp, I don't think you've got it quite right.
It is a clear dig at American foreign policy. It's talking about how real women and families are being torn apart and let down by the fact that there husbands are fighting a war which shouldn't be happening, if it were not for America's arrogance. Coincidently, it's also a war which the newsreader couldn't care less about, the celebrities are using for their own means (like you say, to appear uncorrupted).

The lyrics are wrong at the end (I think).
Anyway, I love this song. It reminds me of my friend, who I don't like in anyway like that, but I do love him as a friend. And he's in love with a girl who I used to be really close to, and she's going out with HIS best friend, and he's recently split up with his girlfriend (another close friend) and he just wants to be comforted by the girl he's in love with, and I can't do anything.

I always thought the line [apples parachute the boys back down] was basically about you know, how men with lower voices are more appealing which would fit in with the theme of the song, and the apple would be the Adam's apple, and the reference of boys is because it's about voice breaking.
Or something. Idk. I know it's not that now though. |

LOL. Just because people reference religion does not mean they are religious. Take Nietzsche for example: he was an athiest existentialist who wrote his first philosophical text based around the mythological God Zarathustra. We are not now assuming he was into Hellenic reconstructionism are we?
And I most certainly doubt Frank Black's obsession with Christian violence in many of The Pixie's lyrics has anything to do with him being a Christian...
I don't care whether these were good examples or not; in fact, they aren't. They are just about as moronic as your assumption that religious imagery = a real religious adoration. |
