I'm not quite sure, but I think this song is about someone dying and what is being said at that person's gravesite. Or, it could be that the singer(s) is already dead and is waiting in the afterlife for the person who just died. For the time being, it reminds me of when you come out of anesthesia after a surgery and your friends and family are all there for you. It's a beautiful and catchy song, and it could have different meaningful interpretations. |

As a frustrated US Citizen who is moving to Canada because my wife can't get a green card in the US, this song has a particular meaning for me. The oak is the national tree of the USA. The maple obviously represents Canada. These lines are particularly true for me. "When the white oak has no answer It turns its back on you The maple calls you, shows you something new" |

The very first time I listened to this song, I knew exactly what it was about. I am moving to Canada soon so that I can be with my same-sex partner and have the rights we can't have in the US. Think we're the only ones? We're not. She and I were married in Canada last year. TomSplasky was right on. However, I can also see the argument that it's about avoiding the Iraq war. Even though there's no draft in effect right now, some people in the military are still going to Canada to avoid going to Iraq. |

The more I listen to this song, the more clear the meaning becomes. In my mind, it is about someone who goes to a party with his significant other. At the party are people who are talking about how wonderful their lives are--how great their careers are, how much money they are making, etc., and it makes him start to feel insecure about his own life. This is why he wants to leave. The reason there is nothing left of his nerves is that he is so frustrated at the party that he's just a nervous wreck and wants to leave. At the same time, the way people are behaving are making him angry and he is afraid he will lose his temper. The reason he is surprised as his mouth starts speaking is because he can't believe he just blurted out that he wants to leave. Maybe he said it louder than he planned, or maybe he is starting to get drunk. |
