VNV Nation – Homeward Lyrics 16 years ago
I laugh at those who interpret VNV songs literally, word for word, as what is spoken or sung by Ronan. It shows a total lack of imagination and intuitive thought.

Great song.

VNV Nation – Honour Lyrics 16 years ago
This is not about the Nostradamus/Mayan/I-Ching end of the world. Kinda hard to fight a battle when the world is destroyed. Ronan has said he chose the date at random before everyone started making a big deal out of it.

Honour is about honoring those who died defending their country, way of life, cultural heritage, etc. That while war is terrible, it is necessary at times, and that actions taken can be honorable. It makes me think about the English defending their land from the invading Normans (who incidentally invaded and destroyed most of the English culture anyways).

VNV Nation – Legion Lyrics 16 years ago
Much of VNV Nations earlier work is not literal, although it may sound that way, since Ronan has stated that many misunderstand the meaning of the songs completely even though he has no qualms with fans coming to their their own conclusions behind the meanings of his songs.

Metaphorically, i find the song to be about one standing there, taking a look at their life when its at a difficult point and realizing what they need to do to change it and wanting to become that better person, all they want to be ("Entertaining thoughts that ive the strength of those I yearn to be") Change can be daunting and fearful, the unknown of what will happen. The line, "And what will happen, will i dream? I am too scared to close my eyes", could be a metaphor of life changing in the blink of an eye. Yet, this person isn't so arrogant to assume that all they want is deserved by them simply because their life is terrible or not what they want.

I used to think it was about an actual Legionnaire, dying on the battlefield with his life flashing before his eyes, fearing his impending death, and speaking these words to a fellow soldier at his side. I like this meaning, but i know its not what Legion is truly about.

Dave Gahan – Kingdom Lyrics 18 years ago
I think he, like so many people, is questioning if there's a God and Heaven. He's asking, possibly in vain, for God's help. To show him how to live a good life as he feels he's going down a path that will lead to trouble. The later verse about "love and glory" not meaning much to him could be the feeling of being left behind or unwanted by God; like "why does He let these things happen to me if He loves me?"

The allusion to a door being opened and being "let in" could mean a church or, to a larger degree, Gods kingdom: Heaven. I'm not a religious individual, but that's what i see and hear in the lyrics.

Stabbing Westward – Violent Mood Swings Lyrics 19 years ago
Ive heard that this song is about Lestat the vampire from Anne Rice novels (Interview with a Vampire, etc)

I think the band confirmed this on their website years ago before they broke up.

A Perfect Circle – Judith Lyrics 19 years ago
Dunno if anyone has thought of this, but the lyrical imagery of the song paints this picture for me....

The song is the Devil talking to Job. Basically, thats it. Since in the bible God commands the devil to tempt Job, and inherently takes everything and everyone away from him to test his loyalty. Job never asks why, never falters or his loyalty swaying.

The only thing im not clear on is if Job lived before or after Chirst. If before then this makes no sense with the Christ references and the "you never drove a spiteful-spear into his side" line (which is obviously referring to Christ. If he came after it still makes sense since in Christian faith God and Christ are the same figure.

Stabbing Westward – Red On White Lyrics 19 years ago
sounds like a suicide. Like most of SW early material this seems to be about a guy depressed about the girl and kills himself.

"First red on white then red on red" he was on his bed (white sheets) and the red is blood. what wound inflicted is up for grabs, however.

Stabbing Westward – Sleep Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is fantastic. its context is emotionally impactful, but the music is genius.

one thing to add, oddly enough. towards the end of the song theres a synth sound that resembles that of Barbara from Legend of Zelda II. It's the dragon boss of the 6th castle i think. the sound it makes is supposed to be its roar (8-bit tech at its best).

Gravity Kills – Drown Lyrics 19 years ago
wow...no comments...and this is one of my faves.

pretty much i think the song refers to someone being tormented by an internal or external force, like their past/previous self/schizophrenic/violent side. That they're trying to get away from this other side, fighting to gain control.
