I really like this interpretation RKMe - it's really beautiful. For me, it could also be about a homosexual man or woman in a heterosexual relationship who feels he can't come out. There are parts of it that remind me of coming out to my mother too... Anyhow, thanks for posting, I wouldn't have thought about it the same way unless you had! |

I don't think one's too hard to interpret. I think its themes are coming of age and transformations. It seems to written after a break-up and he's changed, for the better. For me, "New Country" works as a companion or sequel to "The Rat". Once he was young and brash. His way of expressing himself was through rage but now he has matured and has become reflective. He has found new ways of thinking about things ("Voices I have never heard").
Musically, the sparsity accompanies the character's loneliness and reflectiveness.
