My version of this song is totally subjective, but very fitting i believe.
I went through a relationship in where I was in love and she had doubts from the beginning. I always felt like even though rationally she loved the fact that I was a total gentlemen and was the greatest loving man she ever had, her feelings said that she liked 'bad men'.
So for me, "when anger is in fashion" applies to bad guys who perhaps yell and beat their wives but are all together seen as 'men' more than the non agressive ones.
Also, the first part of the song to me refers to question (rational ofcourse) saying is it really a good grounds for dismissal if someone is simply perhaps insecure or damaged and warm hearted as well.... to then put emphassis on the damaged part and the insecurities he brings? Does that make him less of a man? |

I'm noticing people who give a Christian meaning to this song are given a -1. That is so typical. Why does being Christian make American atheists so angry and childish all the time. Whenever anyone says Jesus, the hair on people's backs seem to stand up straight. Why would someone's opinion that is of good intent do that to anyone? People should really wonder about this I think. What is making you a xenophobe for Jesus (not talking to you rbach48). Because it's an irrational response really.
I know I am assuming this mechanism is alive here. But I'm just saying it for those who do feel this way (if they're honest to themselves). There's alot of this going on in the outside world so why would it not be the same in here. Annyway that's what I wanted to say.

I am with you on this. I definately hear the story of Jesus. Also notice what he says about salvation: " The love he receives is the love that is saved" . If that is not about Jesus I dont know what is. I mean this is exactly what Jesus is all about. Christians believe that they are saved literally from death if they love Jesus. So if he receives love back from people, those people (that love) will be saved.
So for me there is no doubt really. And what you said about being stripped and then stabbed is also pointing in the direction of the Gospel.
What about "delivered him wings" allignes with the Holy Spirit descending on Jesus in the form of a dove.
And Jesus wanted to " share his Key to the locks he saw everywhere", since he came willingly to spread his Word and share what he knew (the path to salvation).
And Jesus was not accepted by the leaders of that time and they " stripped and stabbed him" but "he still stands" for he rose up from death 3 days later and is still flying around so to speak. And since then is the time when "the love He receives is the love that is saved".
This song chokes me up alot, its just a beautiful song, whatever the meaning is. But I like to believe this is the meaning, Jesus :) |

i know its weird to get a reply seven years after you made a comment. But i just really hope you feel different about this song today. The song is about everyone in the world wanting the same thing: peace and freedom. We could get along if we could all see that our enemies want the same things.
Problem is everyone has to see that about the other one, at the same time. |

funny how we're all rationally trying to comprehend a song that ed wrote when he was stoned and drunk as heck haha. But it's good lyrics though. I go for the first analysis.
The words "Dream the dreams of other men..." for me was something i have thought about a long time. When I figured it out i came to the conclusion that its also about putting away your ego. Getting along ... showing compassion for other people's dreams and not standing in the way if you dont have to. Brilliant lyrics. |

Too bad there is no comment yet but perhaps it's only right that a Dutchman like me makes the first step. After all it was the Dutch that introduced the story of Santa Claus in the United states when they colonized New Amsterdam (Now New York).
Funny song with alot of anger and protest in it. I think now the guys will feel different. I'm sure Ed is not depriving his daughter from Christmas every December.
I like the jingle bell guitar at the end :) |

| Pearl Jam – Marker in the Sand Lyrics

I've always felt this song was specifically on the Israel / Palestine topic. But now looking back I guess my only reason for that is the "marker in the sand" line being about a message that people fight about, forgetting what the original message was. But now that I look again I guess you all are right that its broader than that. Great song though. I REALLY admire this line: "So unforgiving, yet needing forgiveness first." .. for me that sums up the entire impasse of religious violent conflicts. I guess that line made me think of the Israel / Palestine conflict as well since both parties are so close and personal and are experiencing the same impasse. |

I only know this song because it was once sent to me by a young woman that was having an affair with me. She was in a relationship and said that she feels about us the way this song goes. That's why my interpretation of this song is that the woman is almost ready to leave her relationship (divorce) for this other man. She's letting him know that she's almost ready and telling him to give the last push (because generally women can't make that final step all by themselves). If only I had listened to the lyrics when she gave them to me ;). Too late now, she chose the relationship to my immense regret at the time. |

in the last verse " the man above her" is clearly the man laying on top of her. He's having sex with her while she is nothing to him and "she doesnt like the view but he sinks himself deep" means he doesnt care if he has her consent. So its rape. I think its only that...... some women who is a good women perhaps is in the wrong place " visiting hell" and then gets raped.

are you serious? Obviousely its a joke by the person who posted these lyrics. This is ironic. The song is partly about not just believing everything you hear from others. And here ppl simply believe that ed vedder actually wrote "you are a furry thing" and begin to philosophize about it. Weird!
"you are everything AND EVERYTHING IS YOU...etcetera". Makes more sense this way??? |

unfortunately the second chorus as displayed here is wrong. I hate that.
It's:
"A truant finds home, and a wish to hold to to,.. but saw the trapdoor in the sun."
Why Trent thinks that Vedder would suddenly envolve himself in these lyrics is beyond me.
This is way more poetic and pure... and thats how it is.
Sadly i can't change the lyrics here!

more info, from that concert concerning the song, i found on youtube:

I think this song is about a lost love that he said goodbye to because of his lifestyle. Basicly he's saying he can't be with a woman for long because he screws up everytime and breaks up. The line " so don't burn your bridges woman" means the heroin possibility is out the door. I think that lines is him saying "don't settle down with me in your mind and let go other people over me, since i won't be around for long." Beautiful song by the way, i do prefer the PJ version. |

It's probably not what Ed meant but what i always imagine this song being about is actual past lives. So the song would be very spiritual and about reincarnation. Not being able to ligth the candle of thought to light ones name.....swearing to recognize someone's breath. It seems to go deeper than simply seeing someone from 20 years back. Also "im not my former" could mean having different looks or even genders than in that past life. I know its probably not what the song is about but i like to give it this sort of swing. Beautiful song. |

Briliant theme song on a man in his last hours of death row. The movie and this song are somewhat parralel. Ed's got a real fine touch for these 'jobs'. He did it again recently with the film directed by Sean Penn called "into the wild". The movie reflects the music and the music reflects the movie. Thats why both make you wanna check out the other. |

| Pearl Jam – Hard to Imagine Lyrics

I'm going with the war-explanation by flipflingo. It's seems to come partly from a veterans perspective, especially the chorus. Trying to explain but describing war seems impossible every time. Hard to imagine for anyone who hasnt 'been there'.
'light your pillow, lay back, watch the flames' I think describes someone watching a warmovie on tv in a comfortable position. Getting a far away and dreamy perspective on the horrors of war.
maybe also in verse one Ed tries to show the difference between pictures (movie) and someone telling the story first hand. The movie gets alot more views than the storyteller gets listeners. |

For a while i thought Ed sang in the end:
" He fills his knife with the blood of a girl "
thinking its another song about a killer who acts out of a twisted lack of love in his life.. maybe a man who was involved with a girl who left him and then he killed her in a crime of passion.
I was wrong, the song is different. More about someone fixating too much on a girl i think. Anyway great song. |

The moment this song affected me most was after misbehaving in a club the night before, pretty drunk eventhough I'm generally seen as a very calm and reserved, even shy person. I think Regenstone is on point here. To me also this is a song simply about a mans attempts to get his life together. He keeps failing to get organized. This song is not about war litteraly... remember Vedder is a poet so alot of his keywords are metaphorical. War is just the war within yourself to fight and have discipline.
Hearing this song I am once again amazed with the purity of Vedder's empathy. Its one thing to place yourself in the mind of a war victim or something but its another thing to read the mind of someone in a very specific gap in society, with specific and complex emotions. And Vedder breaks them down so simplefied in this song. Better than people who are living it could ever explain it. |

wow. The quote in the first post is exactly on point with how i read these lyrics. I really think the first person in this song is a dead person. That person is looking down on earth seeing a loved one struggle with the death of the other. The dead person is also trying to say ( i think ) 'release me, continue your life so that i can go to the light'. It is said that when people can't find closure after someone dying they can really hold on to someone's soul and in that way not allow someone to find the light and move on to the real heaven. |

since i read here about that it might be about Cobains death ive been thinking about it alot. Now its what i think is probable but I'm not sure. In this song Vedder sings "Whiskers in the sink.." -- now this might be farfetched but part of Cobains remains were scattered in the Wishkah river in Washington. Might be some sort of clue.
Someone here said that the cigarbox on the floor being mentioned to him was a big clue in the direction of Cobain but I wonder why? Was a cigarbox found? I'm not reading that anywhere. |

killing yourself to be immortal. mind blowing psychology. I really couldn't say what this is about but the Cobain story certainly seems to fit. I can imagine that someone like Vedder would say 'no' when asked if its about Kurt. Knowing that with that information coming out the song could be a huge it and loved and/or hated by Nirvana fans. I think Vedder maybe did not want to profit in any way from a song like this so he said no to the press thinking to himself that the fans who listen to it carefully will know what to think. screw jurnalists, they will know. I think this song was never supposed to be considered good. Infact calling this song a hit is exactly what pearl jam wanted to achieve with this while at the same time not wanting to profit from it. Its a cynical song about pop music and their mindless lyrics and mainstream sound. I love the way pearl jam albums have sons that seem to be in dialogue with eachother. Isn't that just genious. |

Ive you havent seen the concert in St. Louis in 2000, its on the Touring band 2000 dvd, this song is played preluded by one of the most memorable spontanious moments during any concert. The band noticed someone standing infront of the crowd on the side, translating the words (and music) into sign language to a group of deaf/hearing disabled fans. He reached out to her, asked her name, pulled her up on stage and said "I wonder what the next song sounds...or looks like." And then of all songs it just so happened that they played Given to fly. I think tears rolled down my cheeks when seeing it the first time. Really something for every single fan to see. |

i think the gendercrisis theory is not the right one because of this: He says 'its nothing like your baritone' which would imply (in the gender theory) that a woman wants to be a man because the baritone (which is envied) is a typical male voice. BUT the person refered to in the song is male himself. So the envy would be from a male towards another male. So thats sorta takes out the gendercrisis theory for me personally. I'm sticking with the down syndrome version. Again, an absolutely mindblowing song, im sorry it took me this long to find it. |

i dont see the connection with drugs really. Where would you fit the 'chromozome' in? Also i think the word methadone is more of a metaphore for dozyness or something. Remeber also he's saying 'it don't feel like methadone'.
I really love the one theory about gender crisis though also. Im either thinking its that or the down syndrom one.
I also agree the beginning is very much like Pink Floyd, i began to think it was a cover in that first part lol.
The guitar scratching away in the middle..my god it gives you tears dont it? It made me think about the voice of someone with downsyndrome because the guitar is all over the place in soft and loud pitches, giving the impression of some surpressed choas inside someone's words. Ppl with down syndrome tend to scare people who arent used to it because of their intimidating volume and speachpaterns. Thats what i think of when i hear McCready's solo. |
