Conor Oberst is an atheist. When he says "we will be lifted up from all of this" he is being sarcastic. Same with "now your body's gone, but angel you will live." The "we will be lifted..." line goes along with the whole LIFTED or The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground album. LIFTED= the belief in God and after death, being "lifted" into heaven; The Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground= being rooted in the tangible, earthly things (a.k.a. atheism). Shortcake, I definitely agree with you that this song is entirely about religion/spirituality. However, after looking at some of Conor's other songs that deal with this same subject, (See: False Advertising, At the Bottom of Everything, Waste of Paint, From a Balance Beam, Four Winds, Don't Know When But A Day Is Gonna Come, Loose Leaves, When the President Talks to God, Arc of Time...the list goes on) it is evident that Conor certainly has his doubts about religion/God, that being an understatement.
