| Jonathan Coulton – Shop Vac Lyrics

I like Mike Spiff's interpretation(he did a music video with WoW graphics for this song):
"This song is an ode to suburban angst, which is where people move out to the suburbs to get big houses with big yards and driveways, and everything seems great until they begin to realize that there's nothing to do in the suburbs except go to strip malls and eat at chain restaurants and wait until the kids grow up and leave you.
This phenomenon is exemplified in the shop vac, a tool found in many suburban garages for sucking up leaves, dirt, nails, or whatever. When you first use a shop vac, it seems like the most awesome thing ever. But then you realize it's just a vaccum cleaner." |

I think this quote from Greg(BR singer/songwriter) relates to this song(From the book "Is Belief in God Good, Bad, or Irrelevant?"):
"Many christian beliefs don't "work" at all. I saw a lecture last week by a very good paleontologist from an Ivy League university. I admire his bravery, although when someone is brave for a lost cause, all I can admire is the bravery. He stated outright that he is a theist and believes all of evolution is driven by "God's love." At the end of the lecture I promptly said, in front of the entire audience, "That explanation of evolution doesn't acknowledge all the data. It ignores all the suffering from biological agents: predation, infection, starvation, psychological maladies of humans, etc. How, by any stretch of the imagination, can you convince us that this has anything to do with 'love'?" Of course his answer, basically, was, "The ways of God are mysterious and human suffering is a 'big' question." |

I'm late to reply, but it should be said it's a wonder not ALL their songs are about religion, given that band's name :P |

| Bad Religion – Cease Lyrics

This is straight from Greg's mouth, from the Q&A session at the reception for his lifetime achievement award from the Harvard Humanist Chaplaincy in 2008.(- marks are where he interrupted a thought with another one)
Questioner: Tonight you played Cease ... I just wanted to have some insight into that song. What personal experiences helped inspire the lyrics?
Greg: It wasn't an inspiration, really. ... I started writing the first verse- The first verse talks about blacktop spreading endlessly, like a chemical reaction. And that was because, it's really, umm, boring, that I'm going to reveal this to you. But that's just because they were cutting down a lot of trees in our neighborhood and expanding this housing development and we have this beautiful pristine forest in the back of our property that is labeled for destruction. At the time that title came out, they decided to expand the neighborhood. And that's what got me- so the first verse talks about destruction and the end of eco systems basically. And then I thought, 'Let's build on this, what are other things that cease?' And the second verse is about social movements that have come and gone. And then the third verse is about family and interpersonal relationships, and it just so happens that was at a time when I was getting a divorce. |

I get what this song is saying, but it doesn't give any solutions. sburke09 mentions "doing something" with my life, but what does that even mean? I can't do anything without money and the only way of getting money is to live the way this song advises one not to. |

This song is about killing people in a valley covered in ice. About all there is to it. For reference, it was out long before Alterac Valley in WoW. |
