Um, I don't think it's about emos, just because of the meaning of the word "decadence" (according to Wikipedia, "a lack of moral and intellectual discipline"). I'm pretty sure when he says "Yes, they know that you've hurt yourself another time / don't they know that you're full of pain already," what he means is that everyone else realizes what you're doing to yourself, but you don't. You may feel the hurt you're causing yourself, but you don't know why until he reveals the cause (decadence) by asking, "Decadence isn't easy, is it?" |

You all may be right, but I think that in this song Rush isn't only speaking of world leaders and business tycoons; using pronouns like "we" and "us" suggest that they mean everybody, not just the people in charge. There is corruption everywhere (in the words of George Carlin, "Bullshit is rampant"). I think the "Castles" mentioned are the castles in the sky -- that society of our dreams, the one everyone fantasizes about when thinking of their own Utopia. This song advises us to turn away from atrocities of the past and even of the present, and start working productively together to make life better for everyone. One of my favorites. |

CactusChris is right. ...wreign, wtf are you talking about? When Draiman sings "You want a Deity like me" -- I think he's asking a question, like ..."Are you SURE you want a Deity like me?" To me, he's saying -- "Yeah, time is a terrible god; so relentless and whatnot... but still, at least it's predictable and fair. Would you rather be ruled by a "Deity like me" (that is, one that spontaneously changes its mind about what it wants every few seconds)? ..."Time is just another God of the Mind" says that the passage of time only really has an effect in your head. |

ExhibitXXX is probably right. I don't care whether they're Christian or not, as long as they don't try to save my soul. This song is really special to me, because the first time I ever heard it, I instantly took it deep into my chest and loved it. Most songs aren't like that. If I like the song the first time, I think, "hey, that was kinda cool" but with this one it was like... "I. Must. Have. More. Need. More. Music. Love this (*drowning*)." It has a real guttural, primal feel to it, and a distinct pattern that, unlike many patterns, does not grow annoying but instead consumes you if you listen. It's that primal feeling that really lends meaning to the lyrics, IMO. To me, the specific meaning of the lyrics doesn't really matter, although it's clear that at some points he's speaking from "the devil's" perspective and sometimes, from his own. I like that point-of-view shift, too. Pretty damn cool. |

Also, I would just like to note that the lyrics "you crawl in bed, it's 3 AM" don't necessarily mean that the person is crawling into the singer's bed. He didn't specify whose bed she was crawling into. flirtychik, In what way does this song relate to "governement"? I don't see any connections... |

| Not quite sure what this song means, but I always thought it went "my hands are stained with stone"...Kinda dismayed to find out that it says "scum" instead. The connotations of "scum" are very different from the connotations of "stone." This sucks! | Obviously it's about history repeating itself. I think it's somewhat negative and positive at the same time, "fly away again" being the positive and "never ends" being the negative. My interpretation is... We all keep making the same mistakes... and we enjoy it. When he sings "I feel rain pourin down" I can imagine standing in the rain and singing those words throatily, wallowing in sad interpretations but taking total pleasure in the experience nonetheless. | |

Well... hmmm. Not here to argue for or against Incubus's integrity, I'll just tell you what I think the song means. Everyone's saying that it's about doing your own thing, and I think that it is about that, to a large degree... But it really strikes me as a "do something with your life" kinda song rather than a "be unique" kinda song. "So modify this third rock from the sun, by painting myriads of pictures with the colors of one." To me, that says... paint the world, make an impression, and of course, as with all Incubus themes--mark this planet UNIQUELY; that's an important part of making a difference. "Must we demonstrate that we can't get it straight? We've painted a picture, now we're drowning in the paint...let's figure out what the fuck it's about" AKA: The world's gone crazy and we need to get rid of the old paint and make with the new. |
