I agree with most interpretations of this song that give it more credit than a simple description of an acid trip or the effects of DMT on the brain or whatever. Even though 10,000 Days is a much more "personal" Tool album relatively speaking, Tool's lyrics are social satire (to put it mildly) more often than not. Especially considering the fact that there are other analogies on the album drawn between psychoactive drugs' bodily effects and society ("The Pot"), the title of this song says a lot about its meaning, I think. The Rosetta Stone was, as many posters have pointed out, a translation device that archaeologists and historians used to translate between ancient greek, latin, and hieroglyphics: a huge breakthough at the time. The fact that the song's speaker is "Rosetta Stoned" suggests that there is some huge breakthrough that needs to be communicated to the world, something that would synthesize a bunch of disparate understandings, but due to the way we have "drugged" ourselves in this modern world, we can't get the message across. |

I don't know where Cam-win is coming from: there's a beat throughout the track, and a bass line at the end...it's CLEARLY a song. Just as every word in a book has a place being there, every song on an album has a place. I think this song, in quoting mental hospital patients, and ending with the most important question to ask oneself in life, is an EXTREMELY profound way to end a remarkably dark and raw album. Awesomely chilling sonic montage and great last track. Also, I totally agree with several people's comments making comparisons to Tool's music, and especially "lost keys (blame hoffman)" though I think this track even more resembles the track right after that one on 10,000 days, "Rosetta Stoned." |
