slickvic got it right. don't take maynard's words so literally! this entire album is about drug use in varying aspects: "It has been speculated that the title is a reference to the Twelve-step program. According to Keenan on the commentary for the aMotion DVD, the album is a concept album with all of the songs dealing with the problem of addiction from a different perspective. He said that it refers in a way to his 13 years of residence in Los Angeles" -from wikipedia. take all the songs on this album into perspective, it makes perfect sense. |

does anyone else feel like the lyrics in this song and the ones in Passive seem related? the imagery i get from this song is: a group of friends sitting around getting high on a dangerous drug, and a girl drops and everyone is fucked up. everyone sits around not knowing what to do. possibly the "mistook their nods for an approval" could be paramedics verifying death with nods and he thought they were approving of the situation? i'm not sure, i love the ambiguity in Maynard's lyrics though! |

alright, clearly there are many interpretations of this song. just for the record, i think pikki (wayyy back) had the right idea. it hit me as a song about heroin overdose. i feel it's from the point of view of a friend looking over the body of the overdose. cold and catatonic, definitely the state of an OD. getting desperate to revive the person and telling them to wake up to no avail. "maybe you're better off this way" if they were a junkie with no hope of rehabilitation, maybe they are better off dead then continuing a life of drug addiction? does anyone know if maynard ever had a heroin problem?? or had friends that did? |

i can't believe that there is no mention of the band's heavy drug use during this period. c'mon people Robert was tripping his ass off while he wrote this album! i'm not saying the lyrics aren't deep and meaningful, they are, but the harder to explain lyrics shouldn't be analyzed too hard. Unless of course you're on acid, then this album will probably make perfect sense. but yes i do think this song is about escaping, but more so about escaping reality. |

Don't get me wrong, the Cure is my favorite band ever, but if you may have noticed 'Pornography' has more imaginative and unclear lyrics. Well, Robert Smith has said he does not remember most of the making of 'Pornography' and that they were on acid nearly every day of that time period. Now look at other Cure albums and compare. This is definetly their 'psychedelic' album haha |
