R.E.M. – It's the End of the World as We Know It Lyrics 18 years ago
i dont know much about the artists themselves, but thinking over the lyrics and the attitude of the song, it sounds to me like a song about a very intense trip, and even though it centers around death, confusion and other scary things, the trip itself is still enjoyable in a somewhat twisted sense. the frenzied, yet cheery and upbeat tone of the song, as well as the seemingly random words meshing into one big nothing fits a pretty good description of an intense acid trip. just something to consider.

Jefferson Airplane – Comin' Back to Me Lyrics 19 years ago
sounds to me like something has reminded the narrator of a love that left some time ago, and the memories are all flooding back after something triggered them. he is seeing this person coming back to him in his mind, because thats what he wants to see, even though he knows it isnt going to happen (the line "the shadow in the mist could have been anyone" tells us that there is no reason to believe this lover would be coming back.) a great, gloomy airplane song.

Stone Temple Pilots – Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart Lyrics 19 years ago
awesome, i had no idea what this was definitely about. i saw the references to trips and had a feeling that was a significant part of the song. its true. bad trips are terrifying, because reality is so distorted, you cant make decisions over the numerous thoughts flying by your head. alot of the objects and scenarios are as random as those coming to mind in a bad trip. the song makes it sound kinda fun though.

The Rolling Stones – Can't You Hear Me Knocking Lyrics 19 years ago
heard it in blow, and later guitar hero 2, which is when i REALLY got hooked on this song. it seems to me like its from the boyfriend of a pretty wealthy, coked out woman, who has forgotten about her lover and focuses on her own wealth and chemical-induced happiness. her boyfriend is desperately trying to win her attention back to him.

Jefferson Airplane – D.C.B.A.-25 Lyrics 19 years ago
seems to just be a song about breaking up with someone but acknowledging the good times they had (in the lines times been good/you were the world.) this is easily one of my favorite airplane songs.

Tom Waits – Frank's Wild Years Lyrics 19 years ago
i love this song. beat poetry with a modern twist. i think it emphasizes the typical middle-class desk slave stereotype, in this case the result being eventual insanity, resulting in the torching of the house and dog and wife. all this being done just to escape the predictable, boring, tedious nature of Frank's adult life.

Tom Waits – Johnsburg, Illinois Lyrics 19 years ago
i could see it being a sailor in a bar, especially since the album does have several bluesy, sad or gritty songs about a soldier or sailor. personally, i thought it was just about a guy who loved this woman immensely, and she left him, breaking his heart. i first listened to this song shortly after my girlfriend of a year and a half broke up with me very unexpectedly right before xmas, so the song sounded all the more bittersweet to me.

Tom Waits – Trouble's Braids Lyrics 19 years ago
this song feels to me like its written by a convict on the run after a prison break. the different bits represent different situations one might find themselves in running through a heavily forested area. the part about the weather vane might represent the speed he moves with. the skeleton backseat tucker is an old car wreck in the woods, with the cloth degraded away to the steel supports of the seat. his frequent use of "pulling on troubles braids" looks like it might represent the act of running/being on the move, which then brings him to the next rest/situation. obviously, this is just my interpretation to get the thread started.
