In some philosophical circles there's something called the Eternal Return-you will endlessly come back into the same body (well perfect body) and live the same life again exactly as you did before, with no ability to change things. So you're immortal but you don't know it.

The other imagery just decorates the song-he's talking about going back to a certain point in time (after he kills himself in the car) to...make things right? Make things worse? He's certainly not optimistic that's for sure.

Always thought it was "...the endings of the sons and mothers" myself.
