| Mors Principium Est – Pure Lyrics | 13 years ago |

It's obviously very religious, about how weakened feet will use religion as base to step on as guide for their life. It might be about christianity, since that's by far the most common religion in Finland, where the band comes from, which would fit my interpretation, since this religion is responsible for a lot murder, wars and burning people to death ("holy flames that craved the flesh"). Also it contains a "dead man", i.e. Jesus, though that might just as well be Buddha, Abraham, Moses, Muhammad or Joseph Smith. The protagonist renounces this faith ("no never again"), and calls it "strong", yet "blind". Still i'm not sure who "the weaker" is. It says his/her mind is dark and he/she has pride in their eyes. It could represent an extreme kind of rejection of this faith, where the protagonist plans to kill the believers. The line "The weaker must die" could be said by the protagonist, while the female voice comments on that. The darkness is then evil intentions of killing ("must die"), also pride perhaps to have freed him/herself from the religion. On the other hand it might also be the congregation that calls the protagonist "the weaker", since for believers, it is common to think of non-believers as people that are not strong enough, or that don't have the will to believe. As history shows, they were often convinced that such people were to be taken action against, which can include murder. They might then call the atheism of the protagonist "dark [...] mind". In my view, the first version seems more likely. It would also make sense in a the way that it shows how a person, confronted with crimes and misdeed of believers of a certain faith (or faiths in general?), can get violent him/herself against those people. Then the message of the song would be to recognise this and be scared away, i.e. take advantage of the tool of reason over blind faith and not use violence but arguments. The religions, that are accused here, apparently are not able to arrive at such a level. What do you think? |

| Dark Tranquillity – Therein Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I'm not claiming to be able to interpret this song, but i think the notion of order and chaos from a human point of view is important. The universe basically just exists, humans try to see things in it and also build from it, e.g. somewhat ordered societies. On different levels, i.e. throughout a lifetime, as well as through the history of mankind and also of the universe, once can see turmoil as well as stability. Science and art are means to look at it and express it, that's what humans do and that might be the source of the energy one starves oneself for. "Therein lies the beauty" appears three times, always preceded by some part of the refrain: "Had there always been balance, surely not" "Was it always different, never the same" Was it always solid, never to change" That's a very clear hint towards change in general, an imbalance that strives to reach a state of harmony, yet never reaching it. A constant movement, that apparently is beautiful. |

| Mors Principium Est – Cleansing Rain Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I see a number of more or less simple metaphors in there, e.g. the drums as drops, which are rain- and teardrops at the same time. First stanza: The protagonist cries, and it burns, still s/he feels it is the right thing, s/he want's it to continue. Second stanza: The sun, the pleasant part of life, makes him/her uncomfortable, and creates a craving for the known cave, the tears, perhaps the depression, to hide. But there, the tears make the moon look silver, that could represent something precious or a feeling of order or beauty (the moon is supposed to be silver, and that's beautiful). The tears keep him/her busy with mourning, also blind to the world. "Enslaved with grief", as Anathema might say. Still it feels like a catharsis, a time to go through in order to deal with something that has happened. For now, the tears are a second skin that covers the protagonist from the outside world, and maybe they will someday have cleansed the inner self, so that the cave can be escaped from, or maybe not; it's not know at this point in time. Not sure if there's a deeper meaning beyond this. |

| Kataklysm – Years of Enlightenment/Decades in Darkness Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Ok, enlightenment already sets the main topic of this song, i think. It seems it's a critique of the idea that humans should think for themselves, that they are supposed to follow their own logic and mind instead of blindly following a leader, be it religious or mundane. Their critique describes the decades in darkness, that in reality are still there, despite the ideas of enlightenment being generally appreciated. I'm not sure about the exact meaning, but they could express that humans aren't meant to think, their "souls [are] carved in stone", "you can't escape what is meant to be". On the other hand, there's also talk of "invading the putrid masses", where here i'm not sure if "intelligense to stupidity" is supposed to mean that intelligence is becoming stupidity, or if intelligence should be used to enlighten the stupidity. The decision to this distinction might be the interpretation of this song. |

| Dark Tranquillity – Haven Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
It could also be: "Something now will never heal". The text seems to speak quite obviously of a safe space of the protagonist, a retreat, that however doesn't protect or seperate him from life's pain and grievances. Instead, he has a need to feel this dark side even there, which could be the point where it takes over completely (by even reaching the safe space), with the protagonist's consent and even explicitly expressed wish. The first stanca is about the disappearence of light and sound, which seems to indicate all that is good is gone. The second one perhaps rather speaks of dispair; words, that should be sung or screamed, if they exist at all. Still, he likes to stay in this place, either because it is depressing, or because this haven is still the best (meaning most void of pain) place to be. |

| Insomnium – Death Walked the Earth Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
I think especially the last stanza is very explicit, the "waking hours" (the life) is spent pining away in "cold sunlight" (The sun, symbol of life and joy, is actually cold and bleak). This applies to the seemingly endless succession of days. The protagonist walks through the moors, an area that is hard to walk through, full of darkness and mist (also mystery, but i think this isn't that relevant here). This way, he/she forces "the past away". The hint "What have i for you to offer" could indicate a lost love, which was there in the past, but the protagonist is trying to forget. So he/she has to walk through the moors, where an encounter with death happens. It forced himself into the protagonists arms, so it was a very close encounter, not wanted by the protagonist. This could mean a "natural" death by depression and a broken heart, but could also be a suicide attempt. It is just later that the protagonist is "dragged again up to surface", back to the life of humans, where the next bleak morning has to be faced. It is not explained, who or what does the dragging, it could perhaps be some kind of remaining will to live or the normal course of life (people go on living if nothing happens). I don't think that an intervention of another human being happens. Then, the circle closes, and the loop of life continues, "Till following hopless day". |

| Be'lakor – Tre'aste Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
Looking at it after a while, it could be about humans "start to mess things up" as you said, but then maybe the PoV doesn't actually change, but humans perhaps start to think that they are the Tre'aste, that they "are the star gods". At first, there is this light and energy, like a creation myth. But it already contained some kind of madness, which is important ("prime"). This could be a hint for the interpretation. The fires with "Each holding a mind of it's own" could be humans (though i have to admit that it fits to ancient deities as well). Later the humans realise, that their "imprudence is now all too clear", they invoked some kind of vengance by their arrogance and conceitedness. There he says that "we are just mortals", in contrast to the former statement: "I bathe in power, we are the Tre'aste". Then, the "mortal flesh" dies, and lays dormant, for maybe life in general to await a rebirth. They "accede eternity", eternity being a metaphor for death. I don't know enough about the background of the band to say this for certain, but one could see in that the humans exploiting and destroying the earth, until life stops eventually, for some time in the future to start again. It's hard to be sure when there are no real hints about the perspectives of the stanzas. There is this switch from I to We, that i can't really make sense of. |

| Be'lakor – Tre'aste Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
This songs seems to be about the feeble life between birth and death, but what i can't figure out is the meaning of the title "Tre'aste". Does anyone have any idea what this could mean? "tre aste" in italian seems to mean "three auctions", but that's quite far-fetched and wouldn't account for the apostrophe. The name of the band is derived from a character of "Warhammer". Could "Tre'aste" have some kind of meaning in this context? |

| Wizo – Raum Der Zeit Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
For those, who don't know german: It's about people, who value the life of humans more than others by certain criteria such as race, religion, sexual preference and intelligence, and tells that all humans are equal, and if you want to judge someone to be not worth as much as you are, you can go fuck yourself. |

| Insomnium – Weighed Down With Sorrow Lyrics | 16 years ago |

The protagonist seems to love someone, who doesn't love him: Compelled to cherish beauty in longing Cling on love amidst of the suffering So he can only suffer, and struggles to live. |

| Insomnium – Against the Stream Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
The interpretation of 'not in cycles, but in lines' keeps bugging me, that's what i think now: Life, the river, flows down, and once it reached it's end, it stays there. Many people think of life as a circle, as maybe being reborn. This song might contain a contradiction to this attitude, by saying, it's not a cycle, it's a line, that begins, and ends. This interpretation is (imo) confirmed by 'from existence into oblivion' as well as 'contending with time' (since time will end for you). I hope that makes any sense. PS: Also, great literary metaphor of total rock bottom: And down we go again... into the ocean of sorrow towards the sea of despair |

| Insomnium – In the Halls of Awaiting Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Typical finnish melodic death metal poetry, but the last stance is different, you can see a glimpse of hope here, as a new day dawns and it's getting a bit warm & fuzzy ;). Yet it's not clear if this release is caused by a better life or just death, it seems to me that we can decide ourselves, which one is meant. | |
| Insomnium – The Killjoy Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| The title is the interpretation of the song, obviously.. ;) | |
| Insomnium – Daughter of the Moon Lyrics | 17 years ago |

i guess the person in the lyrics lost his lover and still can see a faint picture of her, therefore the mood is quite depressing. nice melodic death metal, another good song from insomnium, imho. |

| Dark Tranquillity – The Enemy Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the first phrase of the lyrics that i heard was "No one knows my enemy like I do". the person you know best is usually yourself, so this would mean, that the protagonist is the enemy that society needs. | |
| Dark Tranquillity – Cornered Lyrics | 18 years ago |

anyone knows what this song really means? obviously, there's someone in a corner, but what is his sweat and velvet misery? what makes this night so unbearable for him? i really don't know, and i'd be glad to hear some of your thoughts about this |
