I didn't read all five pages of comments, but from what I did read, it seems as if everyone agrees on the whole watching someone die thing. I would have to disagree. I think it is much simpler than that, it is about a misunderstanding, and the writer of the song, I'll refer to him as 'bob', doesn't want to be dragged into it all. This explains "mistook their nods for an approval" and the next line, "just ignore the smoke and smile" means that even though you started a fire(created a problem) on accident(because you thought you had an 'approval') just smile and pretend like nothing happened. From there, everything else falls into place. 'Bob' didn't want to know about this 'fire' that was started because he didn't want to be a part of it (ignore the smoke) bob didn't want to be dragged into the middle of that situation, and he refuses to take part in it (while I just sit and stare at you)
so yes, he is watching someone die, but not really. The death is symbolic for just screwing up, and being called on your mistake, with no way out. |
