| AFI – God Called In Sick Today Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I think someone said this before me, but I'll still talk. I think it's about a loss of religion and faith. That religion being Christianity (I've come to that from the line "I'm caught in the twisting of the vine. In Christian concepts, the vine symbolizes Christ, so it seems like he was raised relgious, but doesn't want to be. Showing how it says "Caught" as in not wanting to be). I think it's Davey recalling when he lost his faith. Let's admire the pattern forming. Murderous filigree. I'm caught in the twisting of the vine. Go ascend with ivy, climbing. Ignore and leave for me the headstone crumbling behind. (He's saying how he doesn't believe. He's 'caught' in faith and trying to escape. But he wants his loved ones who still believe to do what they want, ascend to the heaven they believe him, and leave him in his choices.) I can't help my laughter as she cries. My soul brings tears to angelic eyes. (I think here he's calling the people he loves [family] angels. They cry that he has chosen this path) Let's amend the classic story, close it so beautifully, I'll let animosity unwind. Steal away the darkened pages, hidden so shamefully. I'll still feel the violence of the lines. (I think the classic story they are talking about is the Bible and how his dislike towards the 'lies' of the bible will soon show. He's also saying he can see those lies in the lines.) And miles away my mother cries. Omnipotence, nurturing malevolence. (Talking about the pain he brought to his mother and family through his choice. The Omnipotence... line could be refering to how he sees HER Omnipotent [God-like], yet malevolence [hateful, which could be just saying human]) Well those are my basic thoughts on the song. I could be completely wrong. All I know is it's a beautiful song, whatever the meaning. |

| AFI – The Great Disappointment Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I understand how people think this is about religion, at first it seems like it, but I don't think it's the case. Davey seems to use Historical references and such as metaphors for something more recent, etc. The Great Disappointment was the time when people thought would be Christ's second coming. And of course, nothing happened. I think he uses the idea of waiting and losing faith, and The Great Disappointment to get the thought of waiting for something that will never come, blindly hoping something is going to happen, but you then realize it's not, and so losing faith in what you had believed in. Thats a simplified version of MY interpretation, it could be completely wrong, as could many of the interpretations of any or most of AFI's songs (according to Havok himself), but Davey doesn't care if people interpret the song the wrong way. He writes in that vague way and doesn't usually talk about his songs so people get what they need out of his songs. Also, it could be something more personal, because he has said, most (if not all) of the songs are actually his feelings. Anyways, that was my crappy interpretation. |

For some reason this song reminds me of an addicted girl forced into prostitution. With the whole "Am I beautiful, Am I useable" She's being used for money. But she's so deep in addiction she'll do anything. That could do the whole beautiful yet dreadful approach. I may be entirely wrong, but thats what it makes me think of. |

| AFI – Miss Murder (Director's Cut) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
I think the song is about Davey's feelings with stardom and the end of his. He's debating his choices, to stay in and slowly fade and disappear from peoples lives and slowly become unknown. Or he could disappear (possibly die) and be preserved as a mystery, forever young, forever beautiful [Make beauty stay...]. Now Prelude seems to be like he's talking to older punk fans that aren't fans anymore because of the mellower sound... This is what I brought you This you can keep This is what I brought You may forget me I promise to depart Just promise one thing Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep ...He brought his fans the music, in return they were uttery devoted to the band, but then they brought out something they didn't quite like and left. Its like he's saying you can leave, you can forget me, just leave me peacefully. This is what I thought I thought you need me This is what I thought So think me naive I promise you a heart You promised to keep Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep ...He's thinking maybe he's naive for believing those fans would be with them forever. He doesn't get it though, he promised them his heart, and his soul through the music, yet they trampled it. Then on to Miss Murder where he is debating his leaving for the reason, maybe he should go before the worse happens, before he fades into the unknown, before he is forgotten. |

| AFI – Love Like Winter Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Heres a thought: , You don't even have to get "Love" out of this. I know how odd this may sound but lets forget "Love" as in a relationship and start thinking about "Love" as acceptance. Most people don't realize how much this ties into so much. Think about it... QUOTE: decemberunderground is a time and a place. It is where the cold can huddle together in darkness and isolation. It is a community of those detached and disillusioned who flee to "love, like winter", in the recesses below the rest of the world Also, At the end of the Interview: Calm down, Come down, cold resides with me, I flee to "decemberunderground", As you exhale, I breath in the waterunderground. And I grow pale without you. Don't you see how they are connected, Think about it, decemberunderground is a "society underground" in the end of The Interview, the speaker (Davey) is on his way to that society, a place where he can belong. Now, in Love Like Winter, he has arrived to caring arms. The line "He/She bit my lip and drank my war from years before." could be talking about a rebirth in the society, saying the people there have given him something he could never have imagined, and he's at a self-peace with that... Although some of the song, does in fact, seem to have relationship involvments. Maybe there was a lover that he had left on his way to the community, someone that didn't understand what he was going through. He cared for the lover, but didn't belong in the world. He's mentally ready to leave to the "society" but isn't physically ready. "It seems you're somewhere far away To his face", that may be an emotional far away, seeing that he may not "belong". Well that's my interpretation of it, It sucks I know and I could be completey wrong. But i'm just getting my idea across, It's had to explain personally. But I think the connection all facing to "Decemberunderground" should be seen. |

Personally, I understand how people get Christian/Jesus meanings out of the song, but I don't think that's the case. In reality, Davey isn't Christian. So why put a religious song if your not religious. I think it uses Christian sounding things as a metaphor. But I don't know, their lyrics are so complex and you have to dig deep. But it's more than what YOU get out of the song. QUOTE: "I intentionally don't write in a way that is very specific so that people can take what they need to from my songs. When I was growing up there were songs that meant a lot to me, and then I found out they meant something entirely different to the artist, and it ruined it for me. I never want to do that to someone." -Davey Havok. So really, he want's people to get things they need from his songs. Personally this song has given me the feel to fight for what I believe, no matter the risk, Don't be afraid to die(metaphor)for your beliefs. |

xMidnightEyesx I have to agree with you. In the same sense it sounds like betrayal, too me anyways. This song really first affected me when my "best friend" just turned on me. I think the song. I think it's the betrayal of someone dear to you and the pain and anger that follows. "So I feel much worse now, Your better, your better. Your designer drug, won't work, won't work for me." (So I'm in pain because of what you did, But you seem to be just the same. But you can't do anything because I see through the lies) Connect to a three-volt. I hope your battery dies. How could you run on such,on such voltage? (Pretty much, I wish you the same pain you caused me, But you seem fine, how could you be?) All the same. I remain. The one to blame and I'm Demonized, Purified, Justified. As you let yourself show (The first three lines are obvious. But the Demonized, Purified, Justified etc. could be just mixed emotions.) So now you'll love these screams Whats left of me? (Don't speak) Love these screams like I do (Don't speak) (Pretty much saying that the person who betrayed you is acting like it's a game, tormenting you, hoping you'll crash.) Anyways, thats what I get out of the song. |

Personally, I think it's one of those outcasts vs society songs. Through our bleeding, we are one (Through our pain we [outsiders of society]stand together) Through the darkness breaks the light (The battle between outcasts trying to stay the way they are and society trying to conform them. But individuality will never die, darkness being outcasts and light being soceity) Through the light unending pain (The fact that if we go to the light[society] they will always try to conform us and make us like everyone else.) Deify the wretched ones till the darkness comes again. (Care for the ones that break free of society to stay true to themselves. Honor them for their choices etc. Care for them, bring them in under caring arms until society realizes that the best thing to do is forget confomation, and just let people be people.) Anyways, thats what I get out of it, but I could be wrong. All I know is Davey writes in unspecific ways so people can get what they need from his music. And I know it's done that for me. |
