Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, I just read all the comments about the whole cardinal thing so I know I'm not repeating what someone's already said:P

"The cardinal hitting the window I have always taken as running into something unexpected. Yet this song is about spending time the the girl before her death, which is "expected [for lack of better word] soon. So it wouldn't be unexpected. What is unexpected then?"

So that's a comment from like two years ago but I thought it was interesting. I agree, the bird hits something unexpected, but they were expecting her death. I think that MAYBE (I'm just throwing out an idea) that she died sooner than they expected. But I have nothing to go on other than the whole unexpected window thing.

Another thing (and someone's probably already said this but I don't feel like searching every comment for this too) as if you don't already get this from the rest of the lyrics, but he uses the word morning five times maybe to show how much he's mourning. Who knows. That wasn't any deep revelation or anything, just something I noticed. Sufjan is amazingly talented in his poetic voice and use of repitition.

And finally, I think the 9th and 10th stanzas are in the present and he's forced to remember everything. I think the note could have said anything, but finding it just reminded him of her and this whole ordeal. It's like in Predatory Wasps of the Palisades where he sees the wasp and it reminds him of his childhood.

It's not my personal favorite (that would be The Predatory Wasps) but it's no doubt an incredibly beautiful song. I had listened to it about a billion times before actually LISTENING to the lyrics and when I did, I just cried. I also agree with what someone else said, this would make a good movie. But then I say that about a lot of things.

Great song!

Sufjan Stevens – Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois Lyrics 19 years ago
What I love about this album is in this song and in the last one. And it's so subtle. In the first couple seconds you can hear the sustain pedal of a piano being pushed down starting the music. And in "Out of Egypt.." during the last few seconds, you can hear him lift his foot off the pedal to finish the album. I love it!
