I think that this song is about Syd Barrett, and how he tried to get out into society and be like everybody else but he ended up just as lonely as he was before. And did they get you trade your heroes for ghosts? Hot ashes for trees? Hot air for a cold breeze? I think that he tried to fit in with everybody and change himself to be like everybody else to feel less lonely, to feel like he belonged and was wanted, but he ended up with the 'same old fears', the same isolation which he felt before. I dunno thats just my interpretation of it |
