The Handsome Family – Far From Any Road Lyrics 11 years ago
@[svarog989:1545]
Regarding Selenicereus Grandiflorus.

According to Rennie as quoted here, http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2014/03/05/a-conversation-with-the-handsome-family-the-band-behind-the-true-detective-theme-song-far-from-any-road/,
it is Jimson weed, Datura stramonium. Not even a cactus as widely and quite reasonably presumed.

Brian Eno – Here He Comes Lyrics 16 years ago
Where do you start with this?

Fabulous imagery which explores the seduction of this boy escaping time and space, while constantly reminded of his humanity. He 'rose above reason'? and yet is 'no longer alone among the dragonflies'? He is 'checking out each others supplies'? but 'With his deep blue eyes in the deep blue sky'?

This album is not for narratives. It's a "find stillness and let these images wash over you" album and this song is one of the gems. An utterly timeless album in every sense.

Brian Eno – By This River Lyrics 16 years ago
I love the way Eno entwines space, time and movement to form such surreal abstraction.

'Stuck', 'ever falling', 'through the day', 'waiting here', 'from a distance', 'from another time' and links it with water and air: 'this river', 'the sky' 'an ocean'.

And all of this provides a formless context for reflecting on ourselves 'failing to remember', 'wonder why we came', 'you talk to me', 'with impressions chosen' Fabulous.

Eno ponders apparently purposeless existence with such concise skill.

Elvis Costello – My Thief Lyrics 16 years ago
Ah, Elvis. Where does your bitter sweet love for abandonment and surrender come from?

"I feel almost possessed
So long as I don't lose this glorious distress then
You can take all I have left
I know it's over
If you can't be my lover
Be my thief"

Wonderful imagery. When contact with you as this nocturnal thief of my heart is the most I can have with you. The wound I nurse just to have you come to me.

Elvis Costello – In The Darkest Place Lyrics 16 years ago
In many songs Elvis has such an intimacy with the sadness of this "darkest place". Imagine finding your way by the glimmer of the torch you hold for the lover who has abandoned you? Yes, the darkest place is familiar to me and Elvis communicates it so well. Just look at God Give Me Strength for a similar refrain with anger and bitterness.

Iron Butterfly – Termination Lyrics 19 years ago
OK, here's my go at the lyrics:

Termination

Flying through the skies, voices keep calling,
Bidding me welcome. White maiden lands,
Hurried me closer, forbidden land.

And as I scanned in closer,
Those [??? step?] beyond.

Released from mortal patterns,
My mind out goes beyond.

Spinning in circles,
Miracles happen,
As Lorelei shores, lead (me?) to my doom,
Fear has been stricken,
The end will come soon.

This is termination,
The outcome of your life.

The critical change is the line "As Lorelei shores, lead (me?) to my doom". This may be a long shot but have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorelei
and see if you can find a connection. Open to feedback.

Iron Butterfly – My Mirage Lyrics 19 years ago
Yes, it's a strange one. What drug-inspired 'mirage' did our singer see? Something good enough to invite friends over for, so it seems. I've always imagined some Roger Dean-esque landscape conjured by acid that transfixed our singer to the point that he actually wanted it painted or some such. Perhaps it was just about getting friends over for an acid party on the assumption that, once stoned, the mirage would become real for all of them. And they would be living the mirage as 'beautiful people'. No guesses why Iron Butterfly were regarded as an acid rock band.

Iron Butterfly – Termination Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a difficult song to hear the lyrics clearly, and I don't think that the lyrics kindly submitted by Metallic slayer are actually correct. I'll submit my version shortly for scrutiny.
It's also curious that the pronunciation Iron Butterfly used is more like 'terminition' than 'termination'. Don't know what was going on there.
For me, it's a fascinating account of approaching death and a release beyond, ending with a short ambient passage that was truly ahead of its time.
Musically it is a splicing together of some seemingly unrelated sections, but the mystery of the text strangely pulls it together.

Bobbie Gentry – Ode To Billie Joe Lyrics 19 years ago
The Herman Raucher link is useful here. Have a look at Wikipedia for him and note:
"... He was commissioned to write the novelization and screenplay for Ode to Billie Joe based on the song by Bobbie Gentry. He met with Gentry to learn the reason for the protagonist's suicide, which is not revealed in the song. Gentry replied that she had never come up with a reason."
