He sounds like he's trying to make sense of religion and spirituality. The chorus is obviously a prayer asking for understanding. But the song explores ideas from different religions. For example: "we keep on returning because the lessons need learning" sounds like reincarnation according to one's karma. "in the year 2011, the people of the sun return to free the righteous children" sounds like an idea similar to several apocalyptic religions and/or cults that predict the year of the end of the world. Meanwhile, the part where he speaks of "revolution" and "babylon" sound positively rastafarian. Where he concludes "I'll just move the crowd", it sounds like he's just going to keep on doing what he's doing now, ie. performing, because after all the time he spent "sitting on a cloud" trying to figure it all out, he still hasn't got the answers. |

To me, this song is about overambition. How we are always aiming for perfection that will probably never be achieved. The scientists in the song want to discover the cure, save the world, become superheroes. They'll do anything to achieve their goals. But no matter how far they try to climb, after all "they're just humans, with wives and children." |

sounds like a pro-christian song to me, which is strange for black sabbath. I'm not saying they were satanists, but I definetly thought they generally weren't big Jesus fans. zacharyv- interesting idea, but I don't think this is a concept album about christianity. The first track is about marijuana. |
