U2 – Pride (In the Name of Love) Lyrics 19 years ago
A lot of the interpretations on this song have just been great. What is absolutely silly is that some have written something on the order of, "er...um...i think this song may possibly refer to jesus". There is absolutely, positively no way any figure other than Jesus is referred to by "one man betrayed by guess" is anyone other than Jesus who was betrayed by Judas of Iscariot. Who else could this figure possibly be but Jesus? i dont understand why people responded so tenatively with the remark about jesus. people should have more confidence.

Nick Drake – Way to Blue Lyrics 19 years ago
great work folks! i totally misunderstood this song till you explained it to me.
i would also like to say bakismaki, debbie, and no1knows that i wish all of you peace, happiness, prosperity, good healthy, and every joy imaginable.

no1knows here is another comment on this song like you wanted. bakismaki was totally on the right track with the way to blue meaning the way to Heaven which is always associated with the blue sky. i would only slightly disagree with bakismaki by contending that drake was not seeking so much the blue of Heaven because drake was not conventionally religious. i would argue drake was seeking the blue of nature, since for drake (like the poet wm wordsworth) drake God was nature. drake is inquiring how to find blue or freedom in the blue sky, in the sun, in the breeze, and in the trees. i think is inquiring how to find freedom through nature because he knows nature is way to healing, peace, and freedom but he can not entirely acquire this healing, peace, and freedom due to his considerable depression. as a result, the song is a strangely beautiful blend of sorrow and hope with the beginning of every verse sounding depressing and tense and the end of every verse (and the bridge) sound hopeful as if drake really believed there were solutions for his sufferings out there. if drake were here now, i would have some bad news for him but mainly good news. the bad news is that we will never totally find the way to blue and transcend our suffering but the good news is that nature is the way to blue in that it gives an enormous measure of relief from sorrow and suffering.

Elliott Smith – Shooting Star Lyrics 19 years ago
great comments all. kudos. also agreed that this is a great song.

however, let me add a bit please. disagree that this song does not reference drugs. the shooting star girl who is a very promiscous person given prolly to lots of unprotected sex is probably a drug user. drug use and promiscuous sex go hand and hand now days. also "shooting" star implies not only that she is a self destructive, flash in the pan starlet but also suggests she is shooting up with heroin i guess since that was one of smith's fav drugs. seen this way, there is a fair amount of hypocrisy in the song which is typical of smith. i would speculate that smith for all his genius was given to sleeping around a good bit and he was also (obviously) given to a huge amount of drug use. in smith, it is my opinion that we see a soul that never found peace because he never took responsibilty for his life. a genius and a great songwriter but his music is incredibly sad due to his failure to see that his outwardly directed anger was all wrong. smith's anger should have been more inwardly directed. since smith saw his problems as caused by a world that screwed him over, he was constantly pissed and killed himself in a gruesome and violent way by stabbing himself with a steak knife. smith would have been happier if he learned what we all ultimately learn if we find a measure of happiness: the ultimate cause and cure of our problems are ourselves.

i love smith's work but when you love and respect someone, you are honest about their faults as well.

The Dresden Dolls – Delilah Lyrics 19 years ago
impossible girl, your interpretation is quite good and i agree possibly with "the friends with benefits" hypothesis you put forward but delilah is definitely abused. proof: 1. the manurehead boyfriend still watch and probably mastrubates to porn of her that they made together as if she is a girl in a nudie mag to him
2. delilah's opening of her legs suggests a lack of self worth that abusers feed off of
3. amanda is exasperated at delilah-- an emotion amanda would only display if delilah were engaging in extremely self destructive behavior
4. the song clearly says "he'll beat you like a pillow/ you schizos never learn"
5. the last line of the song is a beautiful picture of compassion in which amanda in an act of christlike mercy whisks delilah away to a play of safety as fast the car can carry them. i mention this last image in a sermon (i am a liberal part time pastor) in which i commented at the end on the heroism and compassion of amandas act of mercy.

agreed impossible girl, a great song here. also a much more complex song here than ANY have commented on yet because none have mentioned how pissed off amanda is with delilah's self destructiveness and how tempted amanda is to not help her. "schizo", "on the rag" -- these are terms which are obviously associated with someone on the verge of giving up on their extremely sick friend. amanda's heroism and christlikeness in the song is demonstrated by the fact that she refuses to give up until she makes sure amanda is free, hopefully for good. thanks for the comments impossible girl.

Nick Drake – Pink Moon Lyrics 19 years ago
also "none of you stands so tall/ pink moon gonna get you all" means that nature is so powerfully beautiful that even the strongest and proudest human being will be moved by its glories, a fact that is proven that even a mighty ruler can be moved to awe by a sunrise or the ocean or the stars. i am wondering if anyone agrees with two posts on "pink moon". i think saying this song is about death is absolutely insupportable. any comments would be great. thanks.

Nick Drake – Pink Moon Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with all of you: the man was an incredibly sensitive genius. how sad that he is gone.

I vehemetly disagree, however, that this song is about death. This is a bright, cheery song about the redeeming possibilities of nature. there are many things which suggest my contention is true. first, pink is obviously a bright and happy color. second, nature as a redemptive and healing force is a frequent nick drake theme-- for example, we see this theme in perhaps his greatest song "Northern Sky". Third and most powerfully, notice that the last song on the album, "From the Morning" is also about the healing possibilities of nature. I used to be on anti depressants but dont take them any more due to the side effects. some days reading about buddhism, listening to cds by great artists like drake, and reflecting on the beauties of nature are all that get me through. drake also found help and a measure of joy in nature and i am happy for him.
