About drugs, heroin.

Sounds like a sonic youth song.

Cage the Elephant – Aberdeen Lyrics 15 years ago
Pretty sure this is about drug abuse.

1) Much like the hit song (shake me down), this song features themes of life and death/lifespan. Aberdeen is most likely a reference to the birthplace of kurt cobain; here functions as a symbol of birth, beginnings and potential.

2) The opening line is "I've been trying real hard to realize; but some things take a long long long long time (a long time)". Clearly this is a reference to lifespan (craving, temptation, living and learning, making mistakes and potential consequences). The part where he says "I've been trying real hard to realize" seems to suggest the naive curiosity surrounding drugs; people view drugs as giving access to higher understanding or experiences otherwise unavailable to them, often illusory.
The repeats of long (long long long long) suggest a struggle, an inability to overcome obstacles in life... making the same mistakes over and over. This is a reference to drug abuse and the compulsive nature of it. So there is this duality in this line of the curiosity and excitement (of experimenting and recreational use of drugs) and ultimately the stagnant compulsive need to use (of drug addiction).

3) "Hold the phone; hit repeat; you've got me foaming at the knees" seems drug related as well, again seems to reference a cycle of compulsive self destructive behavior and powerless craving associated with drug addiction.
"Saw the flame; tasted sin; you've burned me once again" This is clearly drug related. Flame represents the inherent danger, tasted sin describes the forbidden indulgence. Being burned again clearly describes the ultimate result of drug use - being spent, ashes. Play with fire, get burned. "once again" is another reference to the compulsivity of drug use.

4) "Cut the cord, she's a creep" - this is the most powerful line of the whole song as it describes severing himself from drugs. The phrase "cut the cord" has a dual meaning, as cutting the cord literally means to sever ties from something, usually something destructive to you... however the double meaning is that cutting the cord can also symbolize rebirth as in the umbilical cord. "She's a creep" would be his realization that his relationship with drugs was illusory and harmful, a new realization and beginning.
Immediately after he says this line (cut the cord // shes a creep) he screams "ABERDEEN...WAY BACK, WAY BACK" which is clearly a reference to new beginnings/opportunities/birth. As in, cobain was born in aberdeen, way back when... way back before he ended up in a rehab center in heroin withdrawals leading him to kill himself impulsively.

5) "Never saw my dark side in your eyes; back and fourth bloody fingers paintin up the sky...the sky"
This also seems to suggest drug use & addiction. "Never saw my dark side in your eyes" suggests his vulnerability to end up a drug addict (that is, he never thought he would end up a drug addict initially because all he was thinking of was the pleasure of the drug )... or it could be a reference to the utility of escapism through drugs (while high, everything was okay, he had no darkness).
"Back and fourth bloody fingers paintin up the sky" again references compulsivity of drug use (back and fourth), it also seems to continue the prior theme of moral guilt and temptation ( bloody fingers painting up the sky, much like the line "saw the flame / tasted sin" suggests craving, guilt, consequences). Hands are said to be bloody when one does something immoral, and drugs create a feeling of expansiveness which would conjure images of the vastness of sky (as jimmy hendrix said, "excuse me while I kiss the sky"). Jimmy Hendrix was another casualty of drug addiction, might I add.

I would also mention he seems to imply sexuality, and seems to compare the temptation of drugs similar to the temptation of sex, as sex from a religious perspective is an old sin and a condemned pleasure, much like drug use is in modern society. He gives the drug use a gender ("she's a creep") and "back and fourth" sounds sexual as well.
In fact, the whole song could apply to a bad relationship just as well as drug addiction... however the title of "aberdeen" (kurt cobain's place of birth) clearly makes this a song about drug addiction and the potential consequences of it.

Everclear – Amphetamine Lyrics 15 years ago
Am I the only one who thought this might be about a girl with bipolar and a speed addiction? Seems pretty straightforward to be about stimulant addiction, but the part about doctors intervening with pills... it makes it seem as if her abnormal energy and staying up all night might be a medical problem such as mania (perhaps combined with abusing amphetamines). Many people who are manic are the life of the party and get a reputation among those who only know them in that state ("they call her amphetamine" indicating she seems to overwhelm a crowd with her presence)... plus he indicates sudden, major impulsive life changes which are common for manic people ("...she came out west"). Many people in a manic state abuse drugs as well.

Plus the overall construction of the song sounds like a mood episode in that it is a super fast tempo which tapers down to something slower and peaceful...the slower tempo onsets after the part of the song about the doctors and taking pills, which really seems to make me think of a person with bipolar disorder. Of course, drug abuse follows this pattern as well (highs and lows) so it is hardly conclusive.

I always assumed this song was about a crazy bipolar girl so I am totally surprised not one other person thought that, lol.

Garbage – Bleed Like Me Lyrics 16 years ago
I also think it's kind of messed up and not politically correct at all to compare transsexualism to anorexia/cutting/suicidal depression. It's like "which one of these doesn't belong.... rapists, pedophiles, CEO embezzlers, black people".

Anorexia, cutting, suicidal depression, transexualism. Um, WHICH ONE DOESN'T BELONG??? LOLZ!

This song is a blatant rip off of thestart's you me and a knife. That song, FWIW, is actually better because it is less obviously about self mutilation/coping with intense emotions.

Much like every other garbage song, it is contrived and can be directly traced to a song put out by another band a few months/years earlier.

I know garbage is mainstream pop/rock/alt but even by these standards they are extremely contrived. They are so contrived I literally expect every new song they create to have a "dupe" from a few months or years ago written by another band.

Autolux – Blanket Lyrics 16 years ago
If everything had come true
There'd be nothing left to do
Wander the halls
Meet outside ourselves
Ring up the night watch
To wake up the kings NURSE
She could chase us through the kitchen
...Asleep

Our lord is so neurotic
He's a HYPOCHONDRIAC
Our lord is so neurotic
He's a hypo...

You know lately i've been worrying
That it just might be okay
You know lately i've been worrying
That it just might be okay
You know lately i've been worrying
You know lately i've been worrying
You know lately i've been worrying
You know lately...

I black out, just to keep it real
I black out, ain't no big deal
I black out, down into the sun

Dumb
Just like a genius
Dumb
Just like Jesus
Dumb
Just like a kneejerk
Dumb
Now you can kick it on

I black out, just to keep it real
I black out, ain't no big deal
I black out,
I black out,
I black out,
It ain't no big deal.

Autolux – Angry Candy Lyrics 17 years ago
I think greg edwards is allergic to fame. Cuz, like, failure and autolux were fantastic and really top notch music... that went nowhere. His musical style reminds me a lot of kurt cobain:
spaced out, abstract, cynical and depressive yet poppy, melodic, and not at all serious...paradoxically dispassionate yet very energetic... apathetic & disconnected from time, yet dysphoric and angry and accutely aware of past present and future.

And, you know, failure wouldn't have been an ounce as good as they were without his influence. No offense to ken andrews, he writes good music, but greg has the real talent that made failure so special. Failure was a paradox... creepy brooding dark undercurrents, beneath a surface of chimey melodic pop, Failure sounds like time itself, layered time.
And, greg is really what made that happen. That's why autolux is the win, meanwhile everything ken has done has been good but it just didn't have the artistic interest of failure. I remember when "hunted" came out with yotr, it was really awkward because I felt like ken was thinking "oh man, how do I emulate a failure song? " it was just so artificial.

Oh and this song is vaguely similar to "Daddy" by KoRn ... so I imagine the topic is similar (or at least the reaction to it, being that "man life is fucking sick").

Slipknot – The Virus of Life Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the song is obviously about sexual control/rape/stalking etc but you are all being too literal here. The stalking, rape, it is a metaphor for life itself... in that life is just one big cycle of wanting, taking, destroying. "The virus of life" is not just this obsessive rapist, but life itself. He is a victim as she is, as he has no control over it, because he is contaminated with the virus of life (the desire to want, take, destroy). Much of the song is him struggling with himself... not just his passion but containing his desire to control and dominate. The song is not just creepy and sick and death like it also has an explosive, climax that sounds like worlds end... and this , I think, kind of represents how life, is really contamination and destruction. The beat of the song is sexual, and I think he is trying to compare sex with the mechanical, drone like repetative process of life... want, contaminate, dominate & destroy.

KMFDM – Real Thing Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree drug addiction but I assumed heroin... the way she emphasises the word BLEACH (ya clean works with bleach) and the descriptives "sharp, straight, knife" imply injection. It seems like she's escaping depression/boredom/unhappiness through drug use, which heroin is notorious for since it works on endorphins and all (cocaine is more about thrill seeking). "fresh start like a newborn child" and all that talk of shame and doubt etc...

Jerry Cantrell – Pig Charmer Lyrics 19 years ago
This is clearly about how jerry cantrell thought of himself at the lowest point of his drug addiction.

He caricaturizes himself as this disgusting loathesome animal-person. A thing that is only so loathesome, because in the grip of sickness one ceases to be fully human. There is a compulsion that comes over you and everything else goes to shit. It is said with a bit of humor, perhaps to make what happened more palatable to the conscious brain... but really there's nothing funny about it. It's tragic and deeply sad. You can almost hear the "moment of clarity" when human consciousness cracks through hellishness of such an irrational dejected greyed out existence...

"Man I don't really want to die...
...Pretty sure I'm gonna fry"

Yea. Perhaps because I've been so low so many times myself I am all too familiar with that "moment" of humanity... the one that only comes when you are just so grossed up and fucked up that humanity has become so alien, so coldly alien that when a human thought overcomes you, you're awake like cold icewater. You're like "oh my god look at me". But then it's back to "pig charmer" really because ultimately ... you're sick. The song plods along and dissipates.

Awesome song yea.

Tool – Aenema Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm a huge failure fan, and I've been gettin' more into tool recently. For those unaware, Maynard loves failure lots. He is largely responsible for whatever success they had. APC covered the nurse who loved me. Etc.

Anyway. This song musically and lyrically really reminds me of "pro-catastrophe" by failure... so much I am entirely certain it was the original source of inspiration to write aenima. I find that pretty amazing considering how this is arguably their most popular song ever.

This just goes to show how f'ed up it was that failure was as comercially unremarkable as they were.

The song meaning is more or less evident; it's about how backward things are, how out of synch humankind has become with nature and meaningful things... and how, we are all ultimately part of life, "one", no matter how we branch off, twist ourselves up and alienate ourselves. It will be righted by life sooner or later (e.g. all references to mom, to the prophecy that cali will shift underwater and stuff).

I've always found it a little ironic that maynard passionately & obsessively hates anything religious (organized religion) and the concept of people who give up autonomy to have faith in a person or thing.... yet his whole personality is one of judgment, intolerance, arrogant confidence that he knows the truth of how things are "supposed" to be. If only he had the desire he would be a GREAT cult leader. ... which is probably why tool has been as successful (i.e. attracted crazy ass fans) as it has.

Yea... the profane and cynics are mirror images, created from the same logic...
So everything he is trying to accomplish with tool is ultimately unproductive (except perhaps personal catharsis).
