Flobots – Good Soldier Lyrics 14 years ago
I like how they "as you were" because in the military when an officer enters the room or area you're supposed to stand at attention and they'll tell you "as you were" or it's said to take back another command. I hope they did that knowingly, it adds more depth.

Jefferson Airplane – White Rabbit Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is mainly about opening your mind ("feed you head"). And though I don't think this song is 'about' drugs, I do think they're defintely part of it. Along with the book Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Also, maybe it could be kind of a slap in the face to people who go and read this book to their children and yet are against drugs and don't understand why their kids would do them.

And about the book "Go Ask Alice" (which got its title from this song) is a FAKE. It is NOT an actual diary. It is pure fiction. Look it up. If you actually knew anything about LSD and other drugs, you would have been able to tell something wasn't right in that book.

afterthought: though the 'bury your desires' may not necessarily mean sexual desires soo...yeah. it could be about a parent.

Apocalyptica – I'm NOT Jesus Lyrics 18 years ago
i thought this song was about a priest who molested children, though it could be about a father (or mother) that molests or abuses their kid. though the "bury your desires" line makes me lean towards a priest.

i thought it was "your god ain't looking down on me" not "good god he's looking down on me" that seems to make more sense with the rest of the song. also, i thought it was "i won't do whatever you want to". and it's "turned satanic"...

anyways, i absolutely love this song. it stays stuck in my head and i can listen to it over and over again. corey taylor's voice really fits in with the cellos. and since i actually play in orchestra i can really appreciate apocalyptica. i plan on buying their worlds collide album soon.

Pantera – Planet Caravan Lyrics 18 years ago
I just listened to this song with the video last night blazed and it was amazing. Beautiful. Afterwards I listened to Black Sabbath's and while I like the original a lot, I don't like how they kinda muffle his voice soooo...I think I like Pantera's cover better. Same with their cover of Electric Funeral. While this song could be about drugs or something in some way, on the surface its obviously about traveling through space. The video I saw basically...showed the universe's beginning, or planets becoming more than just empty balls of rock. Whether the one by Pantera or Black Sabbath, about drugs, about the universe, this song is amazing. I find it very peaceful, I think is the right word.

Tool – Jimmy Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with polyscient and fnxone. While I've never tried ketamine, I have read about it and user's experiences and the way polyscient has described it while on k sound true. Maynard's mother had her stroke when he was about 11 and the "light" is (was) his faith and such.

Gorillaz – 19-2000 Lyrics 18 years ago
i think that noodle is singing in english. if you listen close enough you can hear the 'n' at the end of 'shoeshine'. They probably just tried adding an accent. The japanese characters might be 'get the cool shoeshine' in japanese.
Anyways, I think the song is about what Ryuuza said. Take it easy and enjoy life. Don't be so wrapped up in everything. Take time to go get that cool shoeshine.

Gorillaz – DARE Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think it has much of anything to do with the DARE program. Man, I hated that. I went through it in 6th grade and even back then I knew that half the stuff they were saying was one sided propaganda and/or just not true. If anything at all, maybe it is about masturbation and they're saying that's their anti-drug. Actually, I think those are two different programs...Well, whatever this song is about it's awesome and does make me wanna get up and dance...naked. Especially high. (DARE sure didn't help me in that category) RyanZiggy had a point saying this is stoner music. Even if not intentionally.

Tool – Maynard's Dick Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is pretty much just about Maynard's dick and having sex. Though the person who said something about them making it sound Seattle Rock style, that sounds like it could be, but otherwise I don't think it's a very deep song.

And also to tiggyStardust and 820: the quotes at the beginning of Third Eye include ones by both Timothy Leary and Bill Hicks. Look 'em up.

And good job to Maltese for doing that kind of math (unless you found it somewhere)... and I totally agree with ya.

Oh, wait. The 'as below, so above and beyond' line might mean he imagines from below to beyond.....I'm definately done now.

Tool – Lateralus Lyrics 18 years ago
Okay, I'm gotta break this song down. Every thing I'm about to say may have already been said, but I'm gotta say it all anyway.
"Black then white are all I see in my infancy,
red then yellow then came to be
reaching out to me, let's me see"
I think that's saying that at first when you're young, before you start thinking about the big questions, all you see is the obvious, only what you can see with your eyes, the black and white. But then later on, you begin to see more, the small details, the big questions, the other hues like red and yellow.
"As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend."
The lines 'as below, so above and beyond' I'm not too sure about, but maybe it's saying every part of him, from below to beyond (or maybe as he always has or as all humanity/life has been trying to do) is imagining outside what's considered normal and he is then telling you to do the same. To think outside the envelope and see what happens.
"Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines."
When you think too much and analyze everything before you actually act upon it is separating what you believe and think in your mind from your actions. And so you're not following your instincts and they're drying up, causing you to miss opportunities that would have come from those actions had you acted upon them. Then he's saying he has to fulfill his need to feel the moment even if it's out of the norm.
"Black then white are, all i see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see
there is so much more and beckons me
to look thru to these infinite possibilities."
With the addition of the 'there is so much more...' (though it could also be a different statement) it's saying that because he can see those red and yellow hues it's allowing him to see so much more than before, beckoning him to look into them and realize the infinite possibilities that they bring.
"As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.
Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind."
Same as before.
"Feed my will to feel this moment, urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come."
His need to feel the moment is urging him to cross that line of 'normality'. And so he's trying to get to the point where he can act upon his thoughts without 'overthinking, overanalyzing' them.
"embrace my
desire to (2x)
feel the rhythm, to
feel connected,
enough to step aside and,
weep like a widow, to
feel inspired, to
fathom the power, to
witness the beauty, to
bathe in the fountain, to
swing on the spiral, to
swing on the spiral,"
That whole thing I think is just saying that he's embracing his desire to feel connected to the whole of the universe and be able to relate to the feelings of others and gain from them.
"to swing on the spiral of
our divinity and
still be a human"
Maybe to explore our god-likeness, meaning our ability to care, love, see all, and be unusual, with others still understanding that even though we're different, we're still human.
"With my feet upon the ground I move myself between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin."
He's not crazy (or on crack, as others seem to claim people are on if they're really weird), but rather completely stable and moving between different worlds, different realities, different ways of life and taking everything he sees in and learning from it while feeling the knowledge go through his body. (I can't explain the "move myself between the sounds" very well, that's the best I could do.)
"I'm reaching up and reaching out. I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
what ever will bewilder me."
Pretty much the same as the embracing the random part. He's reaching for the random or anything different, maybe hoping to learn from it.
"And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been."
And when we follow our instincts and randomness we will find knowledge and possibilities that no one has ever thought of.
"We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been."
We'll continue riding that uncharted spiral to our divinity all the way to the end [of humanity maybe?] and go places and discover things no one has ever before.
"Spiral out. Keep going 4x"
Just keep spiraling out, being different and out of the norm.

So following my interpretation it's really a kind of repetitive song, saying the same message over and over again. But it's an important one so Maynard [and probably the rest of the band, I'm sure] is really trying to get it through to us.
I've been wondering though if instead of 'move myself between the sounds' it's 'lose myself' and instead of 'open wide to suck it in' it's 'open wide to tuck it in'?....

(wants to see how long her post is)

Puscifer – Rev 22:20 Lyrics 18 years ago
Right now I'm reading about chakra (just went through all 8 pages of comments on "Third Eye" and got some really good links from there) and just started reading about the different chakras, starting at the Root or Base Chakra. This chakra is associated with sex drive, along with other things, and when balanced "we are able to give and receive fulfilling physical and sexual pleasure" (taken directly from the page). When I read the location of this chakra point I instantly thought of the line "the pressure is building, at the base of my spine" and just had to share this connection.

Tool – Eulogy Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about matyrs and Jesus and Maynard is kind of making fun of them. He keeps saying how "he" had a lot of nothing to say, you died and didn't reach divinity but atleast you tried, ranting and pointing at everything but your heart (though I don't see this line so much as making fun, just a 'why do you listen to what others think so much, do what you believe'), and how he says like he cares and repeats how he was "sooo loud", and yeah, the "nail the next fool matyr line". But that's all pretty obvious and I totally see where the military and people who think they're better than everyone else came from.

Sounds like a guy saying goodbye to a girl who wasn't who she made herself out to be. Again, like Rev 22:20, an awesomely amazing song. Can't wait for more from Puscifer.

Since what it means is pretty obvious, I'll just say what an awesomely amazing song this is. I just heard Puscifer's two songs Rev 22:20 and The Undertaker last night and I'm obsessed already. I'm a huge fan of Tool and A Perfect Circle, just took me awhile to find Puscifer. I so wish I could meet Maynard without him thinking right off that I'm an idiot.

A Perfect Circle – Passive Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, I don't really feel like getting totally into it right now, but I think it has something to do war. It may have multiple interpretations, but the whole album eMOTIVe is about war and such, so I think this one must be too.
