| I think HydrolicToaster is right. Even if you look in the video, it seems they chose a child to look like a young Ray Davies. I think it could be a reflection on his own childhood, and he is talking about one of his older sisters. There were 5 of them, so I'm not sure which. | |

"There's something that I'll tell you now Now that no one else is around The sort of lesson that I learned from you Not quite the way you planned But I know you'll understand Someone takes a photograph A picture while their sweetheart laughs A perfect moment in a flash of light Counting back from three till one That's exactly what you've done" soooooooo goood ok, i want to say this to my ex that broke up to me, so it's obviously a song about a bitter breakup with the guy feeling bad. Basically in the verse he's saying "let me tell you what it's like for me. Take a moment where we had a good time, and then freeze it in my mind. Now you can just walk away from that thought, but i'm stuck in it." That's how i see it at least. |

| Elliott Smith – Strung Out Again Lyrics | 19 years ago |

"standing, smiling on some fantasy island look in at my locked reflection again oh the tides coming in and i'm strung out again strung out again " this has to be one of best lines in all of elliott smith's songs... I get this imagery of someone that is putting on that nice smile so no one really knows his inner pain... standing there playing the role in some fantasy life where no one really knows what's up. "Oh the tides coming"... this is interesting... what is the tide? obviously it's washing away his reflexion and his identity. Reminds me of the Love song of J. Alfred Prufrock where at the end he awakes and his world "drowns". One gets that water imagery and an illusion all of a sudden be awaken by reality. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful way to end a song... People can go over these lyrics for days and not get their full meaning. Best song writers of our time. |

my favorite song on his self titled. "its really describes how people feel when they are depressed, drunk on it, how no one really gets it and gives their sad stories and "helpful" advise but you know they still dont really get it. " and you nailed it on the head right there. The guitar and vocals is so perfect too... it just climaxes up... oh god... |

"by turjake2 on 09-04-2006 @ 06:53:55 AM i agree heatherleanne, but remember he was very self concious about all his stuff, and didn't like to release any of his more personal stuff. " that's true... just surprised king's crossing made it out. |

"by Haunted on 11-03-2006 @ 05:53:39 AM I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but I believe the lines: this is the place where time reverses dead men talk to all the pretty nurses instruments shine on a silver tray Have a reference to an autopsy, or something like that. " i always thought of a lobotomy. However, i do see how an autopsy would work as well. For some reason though, i don't think he's dead in this point of the song. He's obviously is in a hospital for a reason, but i don't think he's dead until the next verse where he is "carried away". i think... hospital for either: 1. rehab 2. overdose 3. suicide 4. lobotomy something like that... love this song. So very very deep... so much to explore. I wish i could have talked to him about it over lunch or something, but knowing elliott, that would be impossible. He's so shy and out there in interviews. |

| Elliott Smith – Stickman Lyrics | 19 years ago |

trippyapple has the lyrics right.... Just like most of smith's songs, it is about mental disorders (i.e manic depression) and suicide. I see it as this: "I sit here shooting blanks Out of emptiness Ain’t nothing really want to kill Maybe your time I guess Sit and spin the world and its flipside And I listen backwards for meanings" Ever been so depressed and bored? nothing to do at all? i get imagery of him killing time. Playing with the idea of suicide "shooting blanks". He is looking for hidden meanings in life in boredom by playing the records backwards. "'Cause i’m a stickman I live with one dimension dead Try not to think too many moves ahead" This is elliott smith's self esteem in a nutshell. He is a stickman. Nothing deep. Nothing special. He never realized how amazing he was even when everyone said so. He says don't look too deep into what he's saying or think he's that special with "try not to think too many moves ahead." Just think stickman. That isn't really a positive way to think of yourself. "I draw from memory The stillest kind of life Slide after slide You know pain's the sharpest knife Project what's done so everyone can see To me it's just a reversal" One of the more complicated stanzas. When one is depressed, one only draws upon the past. The good times are always remembered, and nothing else really matters at the present or future. Smith draws upon the beauty of what he was. Not what he is. He refers to this depression through "I draw from memory/ The stillest kind of life." "Slide after slide" can refer to 2 things in my mind. First, it can refer tot he chess pieces he refered to before. A metaphor for the moves in his life, or it can refer to the next line keeping the imagery with the knife. Smith has a tendacy with his songs to keep imagery repeating throughout. The king's crossing is a good example of that. "Project what's done so everyone can see/To me it's just a reversal." I feel smith is saying he is hiding his pain rather than revealing it to the world. These thoughts of suicide he does not project to the world, but instead, it'st he reversal. He keeps it in to himself. i'm tired... and i'll come back to the others later. |
