Stars – The Beginning After the End Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't see it as a very political song. Who's to say this is a war in an international sense? I see the emphasis as being very much on the "in our bedroom", as in "is all our fighting worth it".

Heartache hurts. Nothing's going to numb or comfort you. It'll get worse, but eventually it will get better.

Band of Horses – The End's Not Near Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think Band of Horses play it better at all. I still like this cover, but it feels so predictable. The New Year's version has a slow, almost resigned quality, which I think works really well with the lyrics.

I see this as being about how he thinks the "world's decaying" - well, has already decayed actually! The end of life (as he thinks it ought to be) is already here. Everyone had all this hope and optimism about the new millennium and saw it as a new start, when the world would be great, but he can't see that there's anything out there worth caring about. He thinks everyone's "lost their souls" - perhaps he blames it on technology ("the satellites" etc. being a distraction and no one thinks about other people or communicates) or maybe it's just the lifestyle in general - he seems scornful "watch them throw a party like there's something worth celebrating."

Does he see himself as a martyr? Maybe he thinks he could have the ways to "stop the world decaying" but no one would listen to him, not even those who pretend to be pious and good. He feels like he's one of the only people who can see what's wrong with the world - everyone else parties. Anyway, for him, the end is here. There's nothing he can do as an individual to change things so he's just going to be hiding.

That's just my opinion, feel free to tear it to shreads!

The Hereafter – Eulogy Lyrics 18 years ago
Quite obvious from the title, but it's just reminiscing after someone's died.

He remembers how things used to be when they were young and together and he feels a desperate desire to go back. Then he moves to despair at thinking about all the things the dead person will never do. He doesn't want them to be afraid, but at the same time he's afraid himself because this person is gone and so his "best days" are over.

The idea of "the country that I knew" as being before 9/11 is interesting and puts the whole song on a greater scale. Personally I prefer to think of it as being simply one person thinking about a friend who's died. I just see it as his wish that things were different - he'd pay to go back. To him it seems like the entire country's changed because the world feels so different without this one person in it.

The Album Leaf – Twenty Two Fourteen Lyrics 18 years ago
I've got to agree with Free_brownies. I realise that instrumentals are allowed but it seems a little pointless to me. We seem to have no valuable comments on this page about the meaning of the song. That's not a reflection on anyone's intelligence - it's just because it's very hard to comment on the meaning of a song without lyrics (and sheet music for that matter).

After all, let's not forget this place is to talk about the MEANING of songs and I for one am not interested in hundreds of comments simply saying "OMG!!! I love this song!".

Bettie Serveert – Lover I Don't Have To Love Lyrics 18 years ago
Generally I like this one more; I think there's more emotion behind the lyrics. It's something to do with the pauses I think. I don't really like Bright Eyes as I think their lyrics are great but the meaning and emotion seems to get lost a little when it's sung.

One thing I really don't like though is the change from "You didn't care to know/ Who else may have been you before" to "You didn't care to know/ Who else may have been HERE before". I know it's a really minor change but I feel like it makes a lot of difference. It turns the line into a cliche whereas before it really emphasised the idea of meaningless sex with the image of repetition and all these girls blending into one.

Rachael Yamagata – Worn Me Down Lyrics 18 years ago
Kellycarmel, I think the song is about the "beautiful German girl" because she's the person her ex-boyfriend really loved.

I agree with everyone. She loves her boyfriend and he pretends to love her but underneath they both know that he's in love with another girl. She's always comparing herself to this girl and doing everything she can, but it's never going to be enough because she's never going to be this girl he loves. At the end, she's over all the competition and the bitterness and is able to admit "she's so pretty, she's so damn right" but she's just tired of it all.

It'd be interesting to see whether he actually was obsessed with the ex or whether Rachael was just paranoid about her. I only say that because all the times I've personally seen this situation, the real issue has been the other person's paranoia and insecurity, rather than actual obsession with another girl.

Patrick Park – Life is a Song Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with everyone. I think it's about truly living life. "Maybe life is a song but you're scared to sing along". Scared of rejection, scared of failure but by not joining in you're really missing out on life.

The first stanza talks about the unpredictably of life: "there's no promises of peace or of happiness".

The second stanza says that that's why people don't take risks with their lives, because they're frightened, because there are no guarantees. And by the time you realise that it's almost too late and you're dying and there's nothing to do but think about all the opportunites you haven't taken.

Third stanza is saying that it's time to change all this. And it's going to be scary, letting go "of everything you used to know" but it means that when you die you'll be able to say that you've lived.

Fourth stanza. People always talk about being free but most of the time they're not really because they can't bring themselves to escape their own fears and truly take a risk. They use excuses like God and fate but at the end of the day we're all going to die so it makes no sense to waste your life being afraid.

And then the final stanza. Well you're right "life is a dream", but not for the reasons you think it is and it doesn't have to be. Life's a dream because so many people are afraid to live it. They just sleepwalk, going about their day-to-day lives and are possibly not happy but are too frightened to make a change. I think the line "we build our house of cards and then we wait for it to fall" is talking about all our expectations (society's expectations), all the material things that we think are important but at the end of the day it's all a "house of cards" because none of it is really real and important. The final line just takes us out of this material world and makes us appreciate how ridiculous all of these hopes are and how much of a wonder life is.

Fabulous song.

Strays Don't Sleep – For Blue Skies Lyrics 19 years ago
If it's about suicide then the line "how's your halo" is just so fabulous. Meaning "how is it in heaven?" but also a little sarcastic and bitter because they perhaps don't deserve a halo as they're causing the singer so much pain.

He's struggling to forgive this person, and probably even forgive himself. "Could I have saved you?" - he needs to know if he failed the person or if they were doomed already.

Lou Barlow – Legendary Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, there are a couple of mistakes.

But this is just a fabulous song. Definitely about suicide and the pain that it brings for those who are left behind. The struggle to come to terms with the feeling of betrayal. Which is why he's questioning "Did you love me?"... how could you leave someone you loved to cope with the knowledge that their love for you wasn't enough: "why I couldn't make you stay".

22-20s – Shoot Your Gun Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, which is strange because it's not really my type of music at all. I just love the bitter tone. Best line by far is "Oh baby won't you cry? Cry for all the things you'll never be". I feel like that sums up the whole message. This person has been cruel and likes hurting people and the worst thing is that they can't even see what's wrong with them.

The Weepies – World Spins Madly On Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with Stranded that there's more than one interpretation. For whatever reason someone they love is no longer there. And although what they want to do is just curl up and die, the world doesn't work like that and everything just carries on going. But at the same time, although they're carrying on as well, none of it is meaningful, which is why they feel like they're "standing still" and that all the hope and joy in the world is gone: "the day is gone"

I remember when my friend died, looking out the window and there were these children walking home from school and thinking "they don't know that my world has just fallen apart". For them, and for most people in the world, life was just the same as when they woke up that morning. I feel like that's a big part of this song, that life doesn't stop just because something awful has happened to you.

Joseph Arthur – In The Sun Lyrics 19 years ago
I like the original more than the cover definitely.

I think it's about regret. He messed up with this girl and there's nothing he can do about it; they'll never be together. He doesn't even know where she is but all he can do is hope that she's okay, "in the sun" and happier than he could have made her.

"If I find my way, how much will I find you". I think this line is about how he hopes in vain that when he's sorted himself out they'll be able to find each other again.

But at the same time he can't be happy anymore, can't find his way because he doesn't know how without her. He wants someone to "help him to understand".

Bell X1 – In Every Sunflower Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with tbsbrandnewdcjew, I think it is meant to be about relationships but the line "I wouldn't swap the pain, for never knowing you" is so very relevant when someone special to you dies. At the end of the day, although the pain seems unbearable, you're still very lucky to have had someone so special.

The line "my book has more bookmarks than pages" is fabulous. Every memory is so special that it's worth bookmarking.

"We still see you in every sunflower". They're everywhere, everything reminds you.

Just fabulous.
