| Kate Bush – Waking the Witch Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I think one thing anybody can tell is that this, whatever else it may mean, is on one level telling the story of a witch burning, as were common in the 1500s and 1600s. However, somebody suggested to me that this song might be inspired by the novel "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" by Elizabeth George Speare. After all, it does have the recurring line "help this blackbird" - and Kate is hardly a stranger to writing fabulous songs about fabulous novels! :D |

The meaning of this song become obvious when you consider the context. The entire CD "A Sky Of Honey" on her album "Aerial" is telling a story, firstly of awakening, then the artist who paints on a pavement in the day, then it starts to rain and makes his painting look like a sunset, and then it starts telling the story of how the sun sets, becomes the night, and then the day again. "Somewhere in between" is the link in that chain that's about sunset. The play on the words at the end where the vocals say goodnight to the Sun, and Kate's son Bertie answers "Goodnight mum", it a recurring theme in the album. Bertie's dialogue in "Prelude" also represents his role as the sun creating the day. |

This is one of the many reasons why I adore Kate Bush - she's not afraid of writing songs like this! These lyrics are very gentle and affectionate, about a woman who falls in love with a little boy, and she sees a great maturity in him ("There's a man behind those eyes"; "Words of caress on their lips That speak of adult love"). She knows that people would "call me dirty" and she tries to "Let go" of it because of societal pressure, but her unchecked mind still tells her "Don't let go". I also find it interesting that while in this song Kate speaks about a child with a man behind his eyes, she also has a beautifully gentle and passionate song titled "the man with the child in his eyes". :) |

| Kate Bush – Rocket's Tail Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
This is a really wild, free and expressive song. solar_powered's explanation sounds like a potentially reasonable one to me now I read it, but being slightly morbid myself, I had interpreted it as about freedom found in death, haha. As I see it, it starts off with the first person and second person on Guy Fawkes' Night watching a rocket. The second person is talking about how much he wants to be the rocket, but the first person thinks that the rocket is only going to die, so it's not a happy thing at all. But then later on the first person realises that was exactly why the second person was envious of the rocket - because it was full of energy and beauty for a moment before it dies. She is dressed as a rocket and jumps off Waterloo Bridge, and as is shown in the last few lines, she's euphoric for a moment as she flies like the rocket did, until she also dies like the rocket did, as illustrated by where she's cut off in the last line - "look at me go, look at me..." - she doesn't finish the sentence. A little long-winded I know, but that's just what it said to me. xD I also love how English this song is. Guy Fawkes' Night, Waterloo Bridge, British shoe sizes (or so I assume, since size 5 is quite small for an adult in America!) |
