Actually...I think this song is about a coke addiction as well. "You insult me in my home, you're forgiven this time Things go well, your eyes dilate, you shake, and I'm high?" It seems as though the narrator is pissed at his friend/girlfriend for criticizing him because he shoots dope, but he wanted to point out that he/she has no room to talk, because it seems as though his friend has a bit of a coke problem (heroin constricts the pupils, whereas coke dilates them. It also makes you shake like mad) "20 hours won't print my picture milk carton size" I agree with onelokikitty's interpretation of this excerpt. "There's no pressure besides brilliance let's say by day 9" It sounds like the narrator is either being pressured to write hit songs or is being talked into committing himself to rehab (They say it takes 3-10 days to initially withdrawl from a heroin addiction) "Discolored skin gives you away" Well...it seems as though his friend's coke problem is worse than we thought. Apparently he/she shoots it. "So afraid, you kindly gurgle out a date for me" This reminds me of those who like to claim that another person's addiction is worse than his/her own to downplay his/her problems. His friend is a little hypocratical in telling him that he'll be dead soon. "Now the body of one soul I adore wants to die You have always told me you won't live past 25 I say stay long enough to repay all who cause strife" Pretty self-explanitory. "I bear true and an existing witness to this barrel of monkeys." He seems to be talking about junkies. "A self proclaimed immoral success, perfected by each whereof individually deadly and equally so" I interpret this as meaning, 'no matter the substance of choice, you're killing yourself all the same.' "and spread about the surrendered troops, for even thousands of miles will not tear apart their communication, or the lack thereof." Drugs have claimed those who see no hope in their lives or motivation to better themselves. They create such motivation that a junkie will go to any length for a fix... "Vultures, liars, thieves, each proclaim their innocence" They will lie, cheat, and steal for dope but they still insist that they don't have a problem. "In no suggestion or rhyme, your weapon is contained in the wrecking of the keeping the desired effect. The breaking of the spirit thwarts the whole being." He is basically saying that his friend has become a creature who exists only to feed an addiction. He/she is no longer him/herself. "Your weapon is guilt, your weapon is guilt, your weapon is guilt. Guilt." As we've noticed in the first verse, his friend likes to criticize qualities in the narrator that he/she possesses as well...It is known to this friend, but the friend doesn't want to admit his/her own problems |

Honestly, it could be about either coke or heroin, probably both. Obviously, you can snort either of them. The arguments for coke are the "going down the steps on a WHITE line" lyric. Powder heroin is brown. Also, "Thank you very much, can I borrow fifty bucks?" Dopeheads usually ask for $10 or $20. Cokeheads are a little more demanding since it's FAR more expensive. The argument for heroin would be the "few notches on my belt" lyric, which would imply that he was shooting heroin using a belt as a torniquet. Of course, that lyric could also imply that he's getting skinny from using either coke or heroin. Again, you can inject coke too. I'm just gonna be fair and say that this song is about speedballing. |

I like the first interpretation of the song offered on here. However, I do believe that there's a more important meaning to "going clear", and it is synonymous with committing suicide. I believe that this love triangle was so destructive that the man that Leonard is writing to attempted suicide. Perhaps this is what motivated Leonard to forgive him. |
