ok, it's not really about what thom was thinking when he wrote the song..i mean, i understand if you want to do that, and it's fine to do so, except there's always interviews for that. when you create art, it's about what other people get out of it, so you can look into your life and see what you get. |

ok, i think it's about being powerless and accepting it, but hoping in this you can be given something better..."may pretty horses come to you as you sleep." it's about surrenduring or being forced to give everything to a higher power, perhaps god (the rag and bone man?). |

the government and society is the machine.
it's kinda saying how it over categorizes everyone and their pasts, they think they know exactly what the american dream is..and that can be true. the government can control exactly what we see with media and advertising, and that can often lead to something like this. it isnt the future, it's now. |

it doesnt really matter a whole lot about what the author of the lyrics had intended to get across as a message, it only really matters what you interpret as the meaning.
and also, i hate courtney love. i would hate to admit that such an awesome song could be about her. |

| Radiohead – There There. (The Boney King of Nowhere.) Lyrics

oh man, this song is so deep. it took me awhile of contemplation to think of what it could mean...
this whole song can be wrapped up into "we are accidents waiting to happen." No matter what you do, you're going to slip up, and get hurt. at first, when it says "theres always a siren singing you to shipwreck", i think it's mocking what some people think. it's easier to go on with your life while blaming all your pain on someone else instead of owning up to your mistakes and living with knowing that the pain you feel is responsive to your actions. next, when he says "there's someone on your shoulder", it's in the same tone as the siren line. In cartoons, and movies, you can see the tiny little angel and devil on the character's shoulders, telling the person what to do. often, the devil wins out and the character screws up, then in his mind curses the miniature character that once advised him so poorly. but, "just cause you feel it doesnt mean it's there"
basically, his song is saying we're screwed, we're bound to screw up. we're doomed to that.
There there: some meaningless words of comfort. |

I'm pretty sure it's "where there where eyes, there's only space" instead of "whatever i say is only spit". |

I don't really have a decisive take on the rest of the song, but I have a minor take on the last stanza ("In the clay, the holes of hands", etc...)
I think it implies that in a far off place, in a distant world, hidden, there's a patch of clay with holes where someone placed the impressions of their hands. If you can find that place, you can put your hands in the memory of someone else's, see what they see, be someone else, be a little less alone. |
