I'm surprised no one has commented yet. It's beautiful, and practically explains itself.It is a reflection about life and death, through the eyes of an eldery widowed woman whose marriage has lasted fifty years. She's looking out her window and sees children playing outside, and it makes her sad because her own children are now adults and have left home many years ago. English really doesn't do it justice... it's hard to translate a song. For example, the "mask of pain" should be "sorrow veil", like the black veils that widows wear on funeral, which is opposed to the song to the white wedding dress. |

this is about post-traumatic stress from having been to war. just like many other song in this album. i know x-factor is not the best maiden album, because it's not bruce dickinson singing, but i like it anyway. |

The mistress could be a person, but this song has always reminded me of a guy who is on drugs. For drug users, drugs sometimes become their lover/mistress, as their lives revole around it. First they find comfort in it, like the "honeymoon" phase of a relationship. It makes them happy. But soon it becomes a nightmare, when they realise they can't live without it. The mistress has become an ennemy, it takes away everything they have: job, money, home, relationship, friends, health, etc. And even if they ever manage to quit, relapse is very common, sometimes replacing a drug by another (injecting cocaine instead of heroin for example).
That was my personal interpretation of the song.. |

the suicide and the princess interpretation all make sense to me, but i've always seen it as a girl who flees an abusive relationship. physical or psychological abuse... the kind of relationship where you can't be yourself, you have to ask for permission for everything, etc. and one night, the girl decides to leave, she just escapes, and now she's free, she can live her life the way she wants. |

I think this song is about drugs, it kind of describes the effect of heroin withdrawal (Night after night I wake up shaking) and the addiction (Fool enough to fall again). Looks like he is hoping for someone close to him, most likely a girlfriend, to help him get out of his addiction (Heaven sent you to cure this cancer). |
