My 2 cents: this song is about suicide and religion/society A man commits suicide by jumping off a church rooftop. Everyone comes rushing to the man's aid but everyone knows it is to late (the priest reading his last rights) The way I see it is, when a person is depressed to the point of suicide, they need help before they actually go through with it. Now that the man has jumped off the church, everyone rushes to help but it is too late to do anything. The man dying knows this and just tells everyone (religion/society) to just "get the fuck away" because he doesn't care about them or where he may end up, be it heaven or hell. |

| It's easy to say, "Oh, damn this guy must have been on drugs when he wrote this song!"I hate when people just assume that drugs were involved in the making of a great song. Just because the lyrics are so abstract doesn't mean he was on drugs while he was writing it. I'm sure Dylan did use drugs but you can never be sure when it comes to his songwriting. This song is amazing whatever you think of it's origin. | |
