I think this song is about someone who relapsed or is struggling with their addiction and is trying to "get right" by reaching out to his Higher Power and/or someone in a 12 step program. He's talking about 'the saving type' - the people in these programs are taught to put others first and always try and help a still suffering addict. I can relate, especially to the last verse, because when I got into recovery I struggled so much with the 'Higher Power' concept and it held me back for so long. Clearly that verse is about a struggle between his belief in a HP and his disease of addiction. "I made my slow way home Limpin' on broken bones Out of the thickest pine Onto the county lines Onto your wooden stairs I know you can repair I know you've seen the light I know you'll get me right Right" - Great imagery for coming out of active addiction. I heard it described once as the "thick forests of addiction, where one can easily lose ones way between all the trees and be completely lost". Clearly he is 'crawling' back to someone in recovery, who has 'seen the light' and will help him overcome this addiction. "I own a sinner's heart I know the rain falls hard I know the currency I know the things you'll need I hope He hears my prayers I see you cut your hair I know the saving type I know you get me right Right" - Again talking about active addiction with his 'sinners heart'. I think currency and things you'll need are references to the 'ways and means' to get drugs. Currency as a literal reference- $. And 'things youll need' - drug paraphernalia. I won't go into further detail lest I upset someone. He starts to talk about his struggle with his Higher Power "I hope he hears my prayers" and then goes back to his 'friend' in the program who will 'get him right' "Oh Jesus, I've fallen I don't mind the rain if I meet my maker, I meet my maker clean, but Jesus, the truth is i've struggled so hard to believe i'll meet my maker, i need my maker" "I'll meet my maker CLEAN" - Narcotics Anonymous uses the word 'CLEAN' to describe abstinence from all drugs including alcohol, as opposed to just 'sober' (abstinence from alcohol only). He is struggling with his belief in a Higher Power, but the program requires he surrender to something in order to stay clean. "And drain me of the sins i love Take from me my disbelief I know it should come easily But it remains inside of me It battles and devours me It cuddles up beside of me In whispers, it convinces me I'm Right" I think this verse is clearly about fighting your own addiction. The imagery describes so well the battle that takes place inside an addicts mind when you try to stop using that I can't believe it's about anything else. "not alone" "more will be revealed" "coming to believe" are all AA/NA recovery-related phrases. My take is that this song is about being in love with someone who is in active addiction, but you are in recovery, and waiting for them to come join you clean and sober. You wish you could be their addiction instead of the drugs, or at least the light to pull them out of it. |

I think vball made some great points, but I also think smoking marijuana is a large part of the song. It wouldn't be the first and won't be the last time that Andrew will put elements of smoking in his work (solo and SoCo). I obviously think the title and the talk about looking into his bloodshot eyes, plus the repeated use of the word high, are more than enough example of this. I think that the song is about how life is depressing and sad, and a constant struggle, but about how smoking weed relieves that stress and somehow makes everything beautiful. This is why I think the lyrics are very dark and depressing like vBall described, but the music is so uplifting and beautiful just like the sun rising "the sky is on fire". Personally, no matter what crazy shit is going on in my life, waking up and watching the sun rise while smoking a bowl or joint or blunt is amazing, it clears my head and is a nice time to plan out my day and mentally prepare for it all. You guys can have your meanings, but for me- that is what this song reminds me of. I also visualize this sunrise on a beach, since skyscapes are rarely as amazing as in the middle of the summer on the beach, smoking a joint just by yourself watching it from right on the beach, the sky does look like its on fire sometimes, the reds and oranges and pinks eating up the darkness of night. |

^ I agree, but I think that the entire song in itself is about him learning from a woman he was with. Even though she was fake ("she would lie about where she's from"), and lived "life how it is not how it was" he still learned a lot from her. ("I learned to listen, felt like I was back in high school") I think it's about no matter where you are in life and what you think is going on, you can always learn from anyone else, however unlikely that may be. The only part that get's me is the end, I can't figure out where the last line fits in, even tho its a great piece of advice. Maybe that's what she taught him? Idk enough guesswork for me. |
