It's a song about jealousy and the feelings of inadequacy. She makes him jealous - she doesn't wear the dress for him, it's for the boys that she thinks can outdo him. She toys with him, and makes him feel small. He feels out of place.
He even knows she would like the song, if she didn't know it was from him.
He's wound up. She plays with his feelings. Just like a toy that she winds up. |

The main message about hustling, getting what's yours and making your own way in the world by tooth and nail.. and in this case, by claw.
The stripper works her "pitch" just like a salesman.. selling her body and carving her place in the world.
To make a living in that world, one has to be hardened and work the hustle. Metaphorically speaking, she has claws.
On the other side of the story is the narrator, the singer, and the patron of the strip club. He compares himself to the stripper "the white pony" He sees that she's just like him. They are both hustlin' just trying to survive to make their way in the world. |

It is about how people assume the worst about immigrants/minorities. M.I.A. herself has come under racial prejudice. While playing into people's notions about minorities being criminals, she is sarcastically saying all I want to do is shoot you and take your money. |

While there may be some autobiographical content in the song, at its very base the song is ultimately about failure and disappointment. But in that disappointment, there is an undeniable honesty about the situation. The author is at his rock bottom. There is no ego stroking by friends or drugs. There is just stark reality. And that is more real than anything. That is the place we belong. No more cocaine cons. |

This song is not about Carrie Hamilton. According to an interview at AnsweringBell.com, it was about his ex-girlfriend at the time, Winona Ryder. It is a mean and sarcastic song. |

It's about drinking, drugging and chasin' them nightbirds baby. It's about living the night life and partying and waking up one day and realizing that nothing meaningful has been done with one's life. It wasn't supposed to end up this way.. all the hopes and dreams the person had in his life hadn't been met because he listened to the night birds. All the drinking did for him is turn him into an ugly person with nothing to show for it.
"Night Bird" is a term for someone who lives the nightlife. |
