What he means by that line is that yes, you lay bricks on wet cement, to bind the bricks together. But if you put bricks on a wet cement foundation the foundation will crack and fail. That's what that means. And yes, you can build castles out of sand, but they can be destroyed easily.....but I like your interpretation. But I think that sarcasm is out of place in that the rest is not so much....not a very good device to just shoot in for one line...y'know? |

Haha, I love how none of you get the subtle "1984" reference in there. Reagan was empowered in 1984, but it also alludes to the novel by George Orwell. Read the book, and look at the last verse. |

Alright, I figure I will enlighten you guys. JM will have a new album out in either Jan. or Feb. at which time they will tour. Then Andrew and the SoCo boys will reconvene for a new album. OR they will be doing that at the same time as the JM cd is recorded, and tour together after the release. Likely the latter. That is what I have heard from a friend at MCA. |

I was thinking a bit. This idea is likely wrong, and I think the line "this faminlys breaking down" pretty much kills my idea.
BUT
I think this is about a girl losing her virginity to someone she thought she loved, and loved her. But once he got turned off (when it was done) she got, she realized that their relationship was deteriorating, "nothings the same when you give it away".
This really reminds me of depression as well, "now she's shutting down" this may be the most powerful line in this song.
Great stuff, I loved seeing it live in the last 4 SOCO tours I attended. |

kurt_rocker, do you not know that BR has been around for 23+ years? Not just a new banf like you think. Richard Enahobo you are absolutely wrong, this song is not about satisfying the people. It is about pulling the wool over their eyes. It is about how the current administration is using this war to hide the nations declining economic growth.
"There's an urgent need to feed, declining crime" refers to the fact that the U.S.'s crime rate is going down. Without crime the Govt. cannot use their police forces to control the masses, and the people will realize they do not need the Govt. to work correctly, or at least the current one. So the U.S. Govt. feeds crime so they can use it as a control. |

God and music can be mixed, and if you don't like it, don't listen to it. There are plenty of anti-God bands, Strung Out, Pennywise, etc...but if you hear a song by a Christian band, like it, and then find out they are Christians and go on a rampage, you are an idiot. About the comment a few above me, saying music should be used only to glorify God, that is a stupid statement. Music should be expression of self, and if the self in question doesn't believe they have the right to say what they believe. |

This song is about an experience he had at a Young Life camp. This song works great for me, reminds me of a mission trip I went on this past summer. The vehicle we were using to get to the site broke down at the top of the mountain, with no cell phone service we had to walk about 6 miles in the blistering hot sun, so we could get to the restaurant to make a call. |

Ah, I remember the early days, I have heard this song live. I remember, they never played it after 9/11. Sad, this was one of the best songs, always made me smile. Either way, I can play it, and have been playing it with my band, Factory 5, at shows locally. If I ever get a hold of him I will ask if I can put it on an album, because I think we do pretty well, for my guessing on how to play it. |

| Jimmy Eat World – Work (Demo) Lyrics

Way better in my opinion. If you look at the 2 (demo and album) you can see that they slightly tie in.
"Oh my God I'm never wrong
Thats why I'm alone" - Demo
and
"Can't say I was never wrong" - Album
this shows maybe that something happened in his life before recording the album version to make him change the lyric. Then in the line
"Work and play they're never ok to mix
To mix the way we do" - Album
and
"Work and play, I'm never mixing the two
And so should you" - Demo
seems weird, almost like the demo should be Work PT 1, and then PT 2 should be the album version. |

@ swft24: Why do you think the album stinks? Don't just say it does and not give a reason why. I think it shows their progression from a bunch of kids singing blatantly about Jesus to a group of open minded talented adults making their music hit the airwaves, while still sending out the message that they wanted to. My friend Dan was not a Christan most of his life, but I gave him this CD on my school trip on Spring Break, because he had nothing to listen to. Well on the last day at about 2 A.M. he came up to me in tears (NOTE: this is a guy who NEVER crys) and said, "I don't get it, but I want to get it." I guess out of context that would make no sense to most of you, but he wanted to learn about God and Jesus, and so on, and it was because of this album, had he listened to the S/T album he would have disregarded it and not cared. So in my opinion this is their best album, it shows progress, intelligence, energy, and still speaks for what they were trying to speak about from the beginning. Just my 2 cents on the album. |

sheshaw3 I agree. I think that is what he is trying to say. I think that it also has to do with putting things done in the past behind him and trying to be a better servant of God. The first couple of lines remind me of some things that I have gone through, they remind me of when I was trying as hard as I could to be what God wants me to be, but sorta realizing that whenever I don't try so hard it just happens. Anyways, Relient K is one of the biggest driving forces in my life. Great album, more than I had expected from it, I bought 5 copies to super support the band, since they don't play here much.

Don't know why, but this seems like it is about Lincolns assassination, they refer to him as an impersonator, I guess he is assuming the role of someone who knows that Booth was not the killer or that knows that it was an impersonator, but that is the simple meaning, knowing them, it might actually mean something, catchy sound to the song, nice opening to a CD. |
