The Catface section of the Florida Trail is named for the "catfaces" cut into the trunks of many of the pines in this section of the forest. These are the result of turpentine farming. In the early 19th century, the demand for turpentine and its extracted byproducts was extremely high. Known as "naval stores," the sap from long-leaf pines was used to manufacture everything from ship caulking to crayons. |

Cutting cat faces in the pines is how turpentine/rosin was made in the south. To get the pitch needed, select pine trees were slashed to reveal the inner layer causing the resin to flow. The slashes were made using a tool called a hack and were made in such a way that the marks resembled a "cat face".
