but i forgot to tell ehat strikes me most.. "And it beats me, but I do not know." this phrase means more than it means.. what it beats is the whole rupture between our identity, our exisetence and the whole net of meanings....In some momemnts of daily life we can think (a sudden thought) that whole off this things around us is for nothing. Afeeling of noithing..And in this moment u faced with the very question that "why there is something but not nothing?". This "And it beats me, but I do not know" reminds me of this., An existential question.. |

This song is so beatiful.-.-. "And it beats me, but I do not know." this is so close to all german idealism tradition...it is very long to articulate here, but I thought it is about the uncaninness of an individual; about the rupture between the what is actually said and what it has to be said..sorry my english really bad. but.. a rupture between what we are, and we dreamed to be..between our childhood and the dreams of our childhood that could or should be realised.. |

Annelise, it is difficult for me to take out a particular line. With the vocal and composition make these lines an interesting combination. I would say, I sense a general hesitation and dilemma in Joanna's music (this hesitation was interpreted in the reviews of 'En gallop' in this site. It is a hesitation in the sense of going to the inner world of the self; or a dillema between staying in this inner world and the necessitiy to go back to the 'higher education' (from En Gallop). This dillema or hesitation remembers me our (or at least my) forgotten childish abilities on the one hand and the necessity to adapt to the current adult world. When I try to articulate different: A dillema between a dream that should be concrete (for aexample a better world with less coercion, a failed possibility) and the concrete reality which in fact shuld be altered. Anyway, too much unnecessary interpreation just harms he rmusic. But she has a very unique power to provoke to think the alternatives of myself and of the world. |

| It is really difficult for now to articulate..The lyrics have definitly something common with T.S Elliot or W.B Yeats. Yes, theye were "professional" poets, and Joanna is "not that intellectual" when we compare..But...but in my opinion both T.S Elliot or Yeats, or Walt Whitman and for me Newsom, opens the same gate...The gate of some forgotten memories of us, as individuals..These lyrics, with a very complex harmony of vocal and compisition, build a fragile palace of (at least my) childhood. But it is much more than being a nostalgic journey... | |
