| Blaqk Audio – Stiff Kittens Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I think the title of Stiff Kittens was probably derived from it's contemporary internet moniker/meme that came from a funny image saying "Every time you masturbate god kills a kitten". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Every_time_you_masturbate..._God_kills_a_kitten The theme of desecrating my sanctuary might be a reference to the old saying that "your body is a temple" and therefore to defile your body through masturbation, could be described, figuratively, as "desecrating" your sanctuary. In my opinion, the song is about the relationship between a habitual masturbater and his magazine, or porn material, and the rest of the world who frowns on this behavior. The first verse distinctly remarks repetition of behavior. "We're all still the same dear". "Left me before 'forever' and "returned again" alludes to making use of his nudie mag or porn for this behavior and afterward makes no use of this material for any other purpose, and therefore the media "leaves" only to "return again". "show me heaven I will meet you there." Quite simply, show him the image that he needs to picture in mind to reach orgasm. The bridge is remarking on the irony that everyone considers this to be a lewd, un-liked behavior. The Second verse is first remarking that the porn material is designed for self satisfying needs, therefore, there's no need for restraint. The last line is probably describing that through self satisfaction, one can escape repeating painful experiences in love. |

The song is about how most people equate success to meeting financial/status goals instead of mastering your mental and spiritual self. It eludes that confining your definition of success, to the things you have to do to be financially successful, will ultimately deprive you of your freedom rather than grant you more of it. The motif of "American Dream" is an oxymoron because it's meaning has become the exact opposite of what the origional values of the founders of our country. Love, family, tolerance, respect have been lost to the almighty dollar. The lyrics are pretty straightforward. I don't understand how one can infer this has such a narrow scope as to talk about Bush or the war in Iraq. It's about a much grander concept. |

| Switchfoot – The Beautiful Letdown Lyrics | 19 years ago |

At one of Switchfoot's concerts the lead singer said : "Our next song is about beauty and pain. Every beautiful moment in my life has also been imperfect, and everything that has been painful has brought me to a better understanding of what beauty and truth truly are." To me it's a reflection on how bittersweet this life is and how it's just a stepping stone into the hereafter. The pleasures of this life don't compare to what's waiting for us in gods kingdom, but the strife and the painful experiences allow us to understand how good it will be. When he says "I don't belong here" I think that refrain is a reminder that we are en route to gods kingdom, and for that fact it's trivial to pursue temporal wealth, status, and pleasure. By human nature we are imperfect, and so we tend to get lured in by those things which draw us away from our ultimate goal, which is to live with god after this life. |
