when i heard this song, i immediately thought of samson and delilah in the bible, like most people. but i don't think this is from delilah's point of view, it seems to me like it's from another girl. i think this girl was in love with him but no one knew. she is saying "i loved you first" as in before delilah. "the history books forgot about us and the bible didn't mention us, not even once." this relationship was forgotten because of the relationship he had with delilah. the "your hair was long when we first met" bit seems to me like she is saying to him "you were strong when we first met" but now you're not, and i feel like she is blaming delilah. "we couldn't bring the columns down, no we couldn't destroy a single one" their relationship wasn't historic and didn't have a big impact but it was simple and pure. "he told me i was beautiful." i think the bit about the stars is regina saying that the big deal people make about stars is pointless, because they're not a big deal "they're just old light." maybe like the big deal about samson and delilah is pointless because it wasn't a big deal, she loved him first. this is just what i get from the song. i also don't think it's specifically about samson, delilah and another girl, but in general about a guy having an affair with another girl and her being forgotten, but it doesn't mean it didn't mean something.. anything yeah i'm done :) whatever it means i do actually adore this song. |

when i listen to this, i hear "my bright is too slight to hold back all my dark" and "but i've had some time alone to hone my lying technique" but regardless, i love this song. i really like the new album a lot more than i thought i would. it's grown on me completely, and i really like all the bible references, despite not actually being a christian. it all fits together amazingly. jesse is a talented boy. |

"i was always there, but you just never knew where" how cute is this line? they always were meant to be together, they just hadn't found each other yet. i love that line. "i hope you weren't waiting long, i hope this night makes up for time lost. feels like i met you years ago and we're picking up right where we left off" he's just thinking about her, caring about her, "i hope you weren't waiting long" he cares about where she's come from and her life before him, not just who she is now. he's going to do anything to make up for the fact they haven't been together for longer. i love that anthony has written a love song. he does it so well, he should do it more : ) |

"I find the right words to express myself Instead of fitting ‘round pegs and 'round holes" i get the impression that this should be "fitting round pegs in round holes" because he's saying he writes what he feels, not what he feels like he should because it's what works and what people expect. "originality's not a curse" i love this line. bayside have something unique about them, and he's saying this isn't a bad thing. overall the meaning of this song is pretty obvious. i really like it. the new cd is a grower, but it's growing pretty fast. |

i love the "i'm reaching for the phone to call at 7.03, and on your machine, i slur a plea for you to come" part. for some reason, the fact that he mentions the exact time makes me want to cry. he's drunk and he misses her and he wants her to know. who hasn't felt like that? |

i agree with thequeenisdead - i think it's probably "hadn't" as well, but maybe he means he "i wish that i hadn't" as in he wishes he hadn't broke that cigarette the day he quit cos now he doesn't have any left? because i sorta think the "woke up to.." bit is a new line. i dunno, it isn't really important. this song blows me away though. "you came to me like a dream the kind that always leaves just as the best part starts, it ends so abruptly. to leave you stunned and naked in your bedroom, all alone. it's kinda funny how something so soothing gets interrupted by the ring of the telephone." i adore these lines.. i spent ages getting to know this guy and i'd had a crush on him for like 6 months and we finally got together one night, "the best part", but afterwards i never really saw him again. the line "oh my sweet darling, happiness, you've been away from me all along" is an amazing line. he's realizing that even when she was there, he wasn't happy. "one thing that i've never said, i'm truly happy in my heart and in my head" ..what can i say? genius. alkaline trio are just incredible. |

i like the last bit "i need to get these words out before i choke this room's on fire and the headboard to my bed is broken" sorta seems to me, like, when you're in a room and you just need to talk, to someone, it doesn't matter who, but there's no one there to listen and everything just seems to cave in on you. and the headboard bit, almost like it's the little things that seem important when you're feeling like this. so much is wrong with his life, and a tiny thing like his bed being broken seems big enough to mention.. i dunno. i like this song, can't believe more people haven't commented on it. |

this song hits such a chord with me, but i can't explain what i get out of it. i'll attempt it anyway. i agree it sounds like he's with a girl, and he's trying to get her to stop worrying about death. that no matter what she does it doesn't change events anywhere else. i think he's kinda saying that we're not important enough to have any real power over the world. "and every night our lonely planet slides across the universe, and i won't pretend i understand." he isn't going to act like he understands the world and how it works, that it's out of his grasp. every night the world will do what it does and he's powerless to stop it. he's telling this girl that she can do what she wants, take all the precautions she likes, but at the end of the day, we're all linked by a greater force - "none of us are strangers anymore." he's telling her to just live life - "so come to me with the windows open." i get the feeling he's kind of telling her that because of how huge life is, he isn't worth anything to her - "i stand no chance at all." i don't know whether this girl was in a car crash or not, or if it's just kind of a metaphor for something bad happening in her life, but he's saying that what happened won't change events, that it's not going to have a domino effect on the rest of her life, if she doesn't let it - that life goes on, so don't give up. "and one by one, the years of our lives stumble as the moments pass, so please hold on." "a little death makes life more meaningful" is an amazing line. i think it just means what it says - it takes a bad thing to make us realise how good we had it before. i don't know whether anyone will agree with me on any of this, it's just what i take out of it. regardless, a truly amazing song. |

probably my favourite +44 song. "please don't, don't make me sleep alone." such an awesome line. it sounds so pleading and desperate.. i dunno. i love it. and i love carol's voice in this. this song kinda makes me wish she'd stayed in the band.. the album is amazing anyway though. i'm so glad they kept this song and her vocals. |
