The song starts out with the guy trying to forget about his girl, who could be dead or left him, by sticking his lonliness, the thought of her lips, and the thought of her eyes all in his pocket (which is a metaphor for the back of his mind). Then he goes on riding high, like everything's alright but realizes he is still troubled with the remeberence of this person. So he reaches in his pocket for her memory. He wants bones like iron, so he wants to be stronger in the fact that he wants to be able to deal with the loss of a loved one. And blood like mercury, which is the thing in thermomaters that tell you ur tempature, so he knows if he's rising or sinking in how he is dealing with the loss. B/c when you deal with a loss of a loved one for the first time you don't know what is a good outlook and what is a bad outlook. So once again he reaches in his pocket for the memory of that person to help him out. He then talks about getting drunk and laughing by realizing it's all going to be ok. He then sticks the memory of his loved one back in his pocket, so he can continue his life while still remembering his loved one. |

| Jack Johnson – The Horizon Has Been Defeated Lyrics

This is kind of simple in it's own way. The title really explains it all. Back in the days of pirates and the explorations of the seas they had a goal to "defeat" the horizon of the sea by getting there. Of course this was a consistent goal due to that it is physically impossible to reach a horizon. And as the first line goes "the horizon has been defeated by the pirates of the new age," the pirates of the new age is talking about the society today and our societies horizon is technology. The song goes on to talk about how we as a society are so incorporated with technology that we have become technology instead of having our own identity as human beings. For example when he says: "but no prints can come from fingers/if machines become our hands/and then our feet become the wheels/and then the wheels become the cars." There for the horizon, which is the development of technology, has been defeated, due to the fact that our society has become technology |
