Has anyone else noticed that while listening to this song with headphones, if you pay close attention to the part where Thom sings "There's always a siren singing you to shipwreck," you can hear the siren actually singing on the left side, which represents the shoulder devil (temptation), and you can hear the shoulder angel (conscience) on the right side giving his own advice "Don't reach out, don't reach out."

Radiohead – Reckoner Lyrics 17 years ago
also, i think the most accurate part of my review may be the percussion interpretation. i think radiohead intentionally went for an "industrial" sound with the ride cymbal to represent construction/progression. i feel like my interpretation fits well with the aniboom Reckoner video too. i came up with my analysis before watching this video for the first time, so while watching it, i felt like i could predict almost everything that would happen in the video.

Radiohead – Reckoner Lyrics 17 years ago
Radiohead's approach in writing a song seems to be more complexed than a lot of people may think. I love how detailed and visual their songs are. After completely analyzing the song i came to the conclusion that this song is about society's natural form of progression, and how we are destroying our own planet. People are too busy trying to get ahead that they forget about the bigger picture. The narrator is an outside greater being (God) speaking down to us humans in an atmospheric way. I'm no music (nor english) expert or anything, but I am a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge radiohead fan, and i love the stories that they tell and i love trying to decipher them. I truly experience music with radiohead that I don't experience with any other artist. I will describe what i hear and visualize to help people understand why I came up with this meaning of the song. Please feel free to listen to the song while reading my interpretations. It may help you better understand where I'm coming from. I will try and keep the setences as basic as I can.

So the song starts off with the drums. I love how busy it sounds. The impact of the tambourine hitting the hand as well as the bell from the ride cymbal both sound like steel clashing against each other as if it were a construction site making music. It sounds really energetic, and very precise. The eight notes on the tambourie and ride also give the song a forward motion.

The guitar comes in and gives the song a warm feeling, like some life has slowly made its way into the song. as the progression of the drums and the guitar continue WITHOUT interruption, thom's voice comes in. He sings the word Reckoner as if the narrator were almost crying. The next line "you can't take it with yer" feels so wise. I think the narrator is trying to tell mankind that we can't take any of the material objects we work so hard to make with us when we die.

As the next verse kicks in, there are more snare taps (ghost hits) on the drums and keyboard chords make its way into the song. The drums lose its "construction" feel and now has a progressive feel. "Dancing for your pleasure, You are not to blame for, Bittersweet distractor, Dare not speak its name" it's pretty obvious to me that these lyrics are about temptation, sin and the devil but i feel like it has a very broad meaning and can apply to many things. "You are not to blame" makes the narrator seem so forgiving and understanding. Almost like HE understands that we are a very imperfect species that can be easily persuaded, and that we just don't know any better. "Dedicated to all human beings" I think adds to the idea that the narrator is some outside being singing down to us humans.

Then for the first and only time in the song, the percussion stops completely. It's almost like time has been paused in order for the narrator to speak without any interruption. "Because we seperate like ripples on a blank shore" I think represents our freedom of choice (since it is "blank"), and with that ability we slowly drift away from where we came from (God). I actually didn't know that "in rainbows" were actual lyrics to this song until now. I'm not sure how that fits into the song just yet, but i do listen to Radiohead religiously. maybe one day i may come up with an understanding to those lyrics.

The progressive beat of the drums come back in with no kind of delay while the narrator sings almost like it interrupts or ignores the narrator. The narrator sings the word "reckoner" with great sentiment and it echoes giving it an atmospheric feel and it kind of fades away. "Take me with yer" feels like he's advising us to take God with us when we die, The narrator concludes his words with "Dedicated to all human beings" which probably refers to the advice he's giving to us.

Three chords are then played by what sounds like a cello and brings sentiment to the song. the "construction" beat comes back in and adds to the progressive feel of the drums as the song slowly fades away.

any feedback would be appreciated. thank you.

i like how in the beginning of the song you can hear a background noise build up and cut out. i saw it as the "light". i always thought this song was about being an alcoholic and suffering from depression "open up, begin again". "let's go down the waterfall" as in drinking liquor. "think about the good times, never look back" what many alcoholics do. "what would i do if i could not have you?" alcoholics can't stay away from their dear love.
