The Raconteurs – Carolina Drama Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh man, this song is awesome... I hope they make a video for it!

The funny thing is, I live literally just down the street from people like this. And yes, I live in South Carolina. Wonderful representation of our state =P

I think "turpentine and patches" has a double-meaning, it could mean birth control, but it could also mean how she raised the child.. turpentine is what some people use to wash, it's really harsh on the skin though, so I'm thinking maybe she washed her kid with turpentine and didn't care that it hurt him, also turpentine can be pretty cheap.. and patches could refer to patches on jeans...

And the last stanza where she repeats "lying on the floor and counting" without saying marks, makes me think of the girl giving birth, lying on the floor, counting in her head to try and take her mind off the pain. Maybe she couldn't afford a hospital and gave birth to her son on someone's floor? Maybe I'm crazy though.

The Decemberists – When the War Came Lyrics 19 years ago
The lines should be:

-Our shoulders wide and timber long

-Our trust put in the government
They told their lies as heaven-sent

-And they’re picking out our eyes by coal and candlelight

-We made our oath to Vavilov
We’d not betray the solanum
The acres of asteraceae
To our own pangs of starvation

Just to clarify: Vavilov was a Russian geneticist who created the biggest collection of plant seeds, as was already stated by khammers. Apparently it was his collection that they were protecting.

Solanum is a plant genus that holds a lot of edible plants, including tomatoes, eggplants, and potatoes. Asteraceae is a family that includes lettuce, chicory, artichoke, etc.
